Got lucky a friend brought me some. Made my all time favorite squid dish.  Squid Neapolitan.

Squid Neapolitan

½ # squid cleaned

1 Tbsp  olive oil

3 Tbsp. coarsely chopped garlic

28 oz can chopped tomatoes

½  tsp. dried hot pepper flakes

1/3 cup red wine

3 Tbsp. capers, drained

2 oz can anchovies, drained and chopped

1/3 cup finely chopped parsley(optional)

Thin spaghetti

·         Cut squid rings ½” wide.

·         Heat oil in a large saucepan. Add garlic & sauté lightly. Add tomatoes, pepper flakes and wine. Cover and simmer 10 minutes.

·         Add capers, anchovies & parsley. Cover and simmer for 10 minutes

·         Cook pasta (thin spaghetti)

·         Add squid  or littlenecks and stir and cook for 2 minutes.

·         Remove from heat and serve immediately over pasta.

Notes:    About the wine, If you wouldn’t drink it, don’t cook with it.

If  fresh  squid is not available, omit it, do not use frozen squid.

Fresh shucked little necks can be used instead of squid.

Nice size squid but you don’t have any ink on you to prove they were fresh ;)

Just remember that it these squid are here to spawn. These draggers are in here not only scooping up the masses but also ruining the bottom. The squid are attracted to these very specific locations to spawn because of the combination of clay and type of structure. I won’t pretend to know all the details but it always starts with the assumption that we are safe to continue on with business as usual.

i thought squid draggers mid depth scoop up the squid??

I went fishing on a squid charter with Black

Rose. On Saturday they did well. We went back to the same areas on Sunday. The scup arrived in full force. Big scup to.   We caught 3 limits and released just as many.

my quest for a bucket of squid continues!

Not what we saw. You could see the muddy clay in the water as they dragged the bottom. They would also get tight to the fleet of recreational boats and if you were solo, they would aim for you. Happened to me 3-4 times while I was anchored.

One of them was on fire the last day were we’re out. Hope they were all safe but the boats efforts will not be missed.

I tried squidding on the south side early season a few times and never did well.

I went to Gloucester last July when they were in and filled a couple of 5 gallon buckets with a friend in just a few hrs one night. I still have a few bags frozen that should get me through until they make their way north where the pickings seem much easier.

I don’t think the squid stocks are in any trouble. Squid grow incredibly fast and generally live less than a year. I was out there yesterday and the there were tons of boats out the weather was perfect, and the fishing was great! Went home with a full bucket.

How much do they charge to go out on a boat for squid these days?
