kclee113
Found some pogies in a shore spot on Monday night, with no other fishermen in sight. I've never seen them in that close before. I could easily cast over them and bring my plugs back through the entire school. Some slight disturbances underneath them but nothing crazy. Starting with topwater, I basically threw the bag at them. Picky fish. Managed a 30" bass and a dink both on a laser shiner sp minnow. Frustrating, but I beat the skunk.
bdowning
Earlier this season in RI, I found a huge school of pogies tight to shore and was snagging them on nearly every cast. I tried everything. Throwing lures in the school, outside of the school and even livelining the pogies. Nuthin'. Sometimes the bass just aren't there or have no interest in your offerings. -bd Edited July 5, 2017 by bdowning Pfantum Pfishah
stormy monday
Hit my favorite lunchtime NS beach today and as soon as I got there I saw it; bad beach mojo. Some A$$hat decided to keep a 24" bass ("really it was almost a keeper!") fillet it right then and there and leave the remains in the sand at the designated swimming area. This particular spot isn't overly well known, but the people who go there are usually Moms with toddlers and pre-school kids. So, the kind of people likely to complain about guts on the beach. Moved it into the current to get it out of there (at best it was 25") then fished the beach without a touch for the first time in a really long time. Douche has put bad mojo on this beach. Hopefully I can release a keeper here soon to offset it....Hopefully a dark cloud follows the person for the rest of the season....

If so that could be one reason the schools disappeared. Perhaps the trawlers had a banner day and scooped up a large fraction of bunker. After this hypothetical trawler hit could be that the remaining fish fled and scattered in much smaller pods. Or the main schools simply could have moved 5-10 miles and broke up on their own. Can only guess as to why they were bunched up like that in the 1st place. Maybe they were in the area tight like that for a food bloom(zooplankton). Or could be a result of their own northward migration and the migratory school either moved on or split up into smaller pods. One thing I've heard is (I think) that Menhaden often travel against(??) the prevailing wind. So if it's an offshore breeze theyll move inshore; onshore winds drive them off. --Maybe someone could clarify that who knows better. Regardless, still sucks they bounced though. Whether you hit bass on em or not I like when big bait are around. Gives bass a reason to stick in area. Plus they make great bait to rustle up and take to productive locations if nothing is directly on the schools themselves Fishing kills me exactly as it keeps me alive. Twisted
Fished Marblehead/Swampscott on Sunday, tons of bait around and locked in on a big school of stripers who were very hungry. Lots of action for 2 hours, biggest fish was 38" and then the bite stopped. Great day on the water!!

rst3
offshore NS No tuner for us today. Problem may have been this hungry cod. Looks like it hooked itself, then gnawed on bait for 1/2hr. dark_helmet
Fished a North shore harbor last night, couldn't buy a fish. Gulls were feeding very strangely on top, eating what looked to be eels or seaworms. Lots of brown goop on top of the water as well.
ThatGuyEric
I too had a run in with the goop. Also saw an article on it http://boston.cbslocal.com/2017/07/06/boston-harbor-brown-substance-is-harmless-expert-says/

We're close to the full moon I figured it might be some sort of worm hatch, but everything I've read about worm hatches seems like the fish would be going bonkers. Wish I could have seen what they were eating.
