California Caster
Landing fish no matter what size can be condensed to "1" critical factour...."Line Angle".....When fishing from a boat , there are "3" options....under power, at anchor, drifting. Fish that are landed in the quickest manner, are done so, by maintaining the greatest vertical line angle, DIRECTLY above the hooked fish. There is a profound reason that boats fishing for Tuna, Marlin have hulls & transoms designed with the specific purpose & intent of "Backing Down". All the angler is on Wicked Tuna is merely a "Line Retriever"....the boat "backs down".....WIND!!!...fish takes line...pause....WIND!!!...pause...WIND!!!...it's Not "Rocket Science"....only for those that choose to make it as such....now....keep the vessel anchored, and take the bent rod OUT of it's rod holder, and turn the fight into a "Stand-Up"....& it's becomes an ENTIRELY different confrontation between "Angler & Fish"....that will quickly bring into light & expose the "Accomplished" & the "Neophyte".....Mark Fish have NO HANDS!!!....if you're getting bit, it's in the fish's month....SET THE HOOK!!!!! Some Men are born Great, other men become Great, some men have Greatness thrust upon them, many are desperately seeking a 4th way Most would follow an established path, rather than blazing one's own trail I'm still alive, cause you CAN'T kill EVIL

That boat is designed for the deck to drain quickly and not back down. Plus if you watched the show you would see that when they come off their anchor they circle forward to get the angle on the fish, and very seldom back down. If being stupid got us into this mess, how come being stupid can't get us out?I don't want to behave improperly, so I just won't behave at all. 55chev
Hey! Don't argue with Punctuation Mark. He's from California and knows all there is to know about the northeast fleet! He's already informed us that tuna come through the transom, not over the rail! You guys better start listening!

I'm referring to Marlin/Tuna vessels that are designed for a very species specific intended purpose, NOT the example such as you mentioned ( Hard Merchandise), which is pursuing a species of fish ( BFT) that it was NOT designed for. As far as 55chev, you are correct in that certain vessels employ a "Gin Pole", the gin pole is used out of necessity, NOT by design. An informed person would NOT debate the transom's door vast effectiveness & superior design OVER a gin pole....Mark Fish have NO HANDS!!!....if you're getting bit, it's in the fish's month....SET THE HOOK!!!!! 55chev
Actually they ( The BFT) are pulled through the transom door....Mark I'm not debating the effectiveness of anything. You made a pretty broad statement, and I corrected you. I stated that most of the fleet, in fact, hoist the fish over the rail. Nowhere did I say one method was better than another. I would Seriously Doubt!, that in the 21st Century, that as you claim "Most" of the fleet is using the antiquated method of gin poling to land BFT....Mark Fish have NO HANDS!!!....if you're getting bit, it's in the fish's month....SET THE HOOK!!!!! kroc
I don't know the first thing about tuna fishing, I'm strictly a surf guy, but if I ever pulled as many hooks as I see on this show in one season, I would have quit fishing years ago. Great show and great resilency by the anglers, but I don't think I could deal with the constant heartbreak.
Dansmith
Ad infinitum...ANOTHER thing that bugs me about "Limp Tuna".....the fisherman & ( I use that term loosely,) go offshore & COMPLAIN about only having "1" live herring ......here's a novel idea....how about catching some live bait...PRIOR to heading offshore!!!!....If "I" personally was fishing for BFT worth HUGE $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$...."I" would make SURE to have an abundant supply of live bait,,,,"Abundant" meaning....MORE THAN 1!!!!...Mark Someone needs a grammar/ punctuation lesson!
