There is absolutely nothing real about "reality television", nothing, really, I swear. Only 2 of those boats could economically survive as commercial blue fin boats. I don't mean thrive either, I mean cover the cost of fuel and bait and turn a profit. I don't watch the show but was privy to the casting process. They needed boats to catch fish and the rest were cast as "characters". There is nothing to "film" 95-99% of the time.
fish4all
"I've been on several "reality" hunting and fishing shows" Nice! What shows? Where can we view a few of these shows ? There should be 4-5 we can watch. Great for the winter time...
clambellies
The show is not scripted. If Discovery or National Geographic came to my house and recorded me fishing for a whole season and made a television show out of it, do you really think I would be reading from a script or something? No, I wouldn't. What they say comes from their mind, not a packet of paper of what to say. Mind you, if they told me that I had to read from a script, I would then strongly re-consider being on the show, because I'm not going to limit myself on what and what not to say just to make the show intense or what have you. I believe what is "scripted" are the plot lines, not the entire dialog. A show about just fishing would be boring real quick. They have to throw in some rivalries and conflict to get keep the viewers interest. The producers have a plot line in mind before they roll one inch of video. For a film or video crew, the pressure is intense to tell an entire story and not be missing one critical piece of footage that ties the entire story together. (In the late 80's-early 90's I filmed archery hunts) Missing that little piece you have a disjointed mess. The way to be sure you have the whole story is to "storyboard" the entire show before it actually happens, and follow the storyboard.

There is absolutely nothing real about "reality television", nothing, really, I swear. Your right about that! Take the episodes where Paulie quit on Dave. Then you have the set-up rivalry, then He's back with Dave and all is well. Ya, that would happen in real life. If you walked off a boat you'd never be allowed back on, no matter what. Reality shows....who'se reality? I always get a kick out of some reality shows where the characters are in some sort of trouble, no food or water, their vehicle has broken down and they're stranded, oh woe, how will they survive? Ah, maybe the 3 man video/audio/producer crew who are right there can pitch in......
RoosterSeeker
I DVR the show so that I can FF though all of the Drama and just catch the fishing portions. It bummed me out to see the Hard Merch boat sunk at the end of last season.
OOB Fisherman
Pretty sure the water balloon incident between Tyler and Ralph wasn't scripted either (insert sarcasm here).....EVERY show on tv is "scripted", if it wasn't you'd be watching it out your back window not on the boob tube!!!! Doesn't mean they're putting fish on hooks off camera and then acting surprised when a rod bends over, but everything else to some degree is the result of some sort of "scripting." How much you want to bet that in some of shots with someone cranking on a bending rod there was a five gallon bucket on the other end. ====Mako Mike====Makomania SportfishingPt. There were a few scenes in the past where one type of rod & reel was being used with a fish on then it was a different reel when the fish came in. I'm sure it was a case of having to use a different piece of film to complete a sequence where some film was missing due to equipment failure. That has to be one the poorest shows on TV when it comes to continuity editing. Did you see the show where they caught a thresher shark and showed an underwater shot of a blue shark? Or when they did the same with a blue shark and a mako? They should hire me to review their editing. ====Mako Mike====Makomania SportfishingPt. BrianBM
Continuity of editing is hilariously bad. This isn't unusual; if you watch a History Channel or Military Channel episode that purports to be serious history (as opposed to the endless parade of Nostradamus and extraterrestrials) you'll see, if you know what you're looking at, footage from one invasion with a voice-over referring to another, chatter about this-or-that Axis aircraft accompanying AT-6s pretending to be Japanese dive bombers, etc. We're watching this with a far more informed eye than most viewers so we catch what they miss.
