Charleston
You just described NJ... unfortunately, you have to be either rich or work to 72 to be able to swing the real estate costs and property taxes in retirement. I'm not rich and am too lazy to work to 72... or 62... or 55. So, I'm planning on moving inland in a few years... WAY inland... 850 miles inland... to a seemingly mythical place where real estate is 50% of what it is in NJ and property taxes are 30% of NJ. But, will be doing three 1-2 week trips (maybe 4) to get my salt fix. Mass in May, Montauk in Sept, Jersey in December are a lock. Rest of the time will be spent chasing largemouth and landlocked stripers... maybe even get a musky - never chased them, but I'll have time on my hands. I know a place in Maine just like what you describe. Grampa Old Spook lived there when he died. The largemouth bass fishing is phenominal. Trips to the salt would be necessary. I am old but I'm slow. Unfortunately, that is whats chasing us out of NJ,and it's coming up quickly. ( anybody want to buy a house in Lincroft ?...PM ) Headed to SC ( Charleston area ) plenty to do and you can fish / golf most of the year. Most importantly, I can actually retire...big saving with property taxes and real estate costs.

But looks like I'll have to stay and work way longer than I'd planned near NYC. See you on the big one.

bob jones
I am retired & own a house 20 minutes from the Montauk Lighthouse. It was always my dream to move there when we retired. BUT, we have 8 grand children who live 100 miles away from the lighthouse & that is where I spend most of my time. It's funny how priorities change.
