Kong1970
I'm looking to the experts here for some advise on the purchase of an inexpensive plugging rod. I am looking for spinning 8' two piece rod for throwing bombers, swim baits, poppers etc. I would like to spend less that $100. I am not as avid as many of the members here and can't really justify spending hundreds of dollars on a plugging setup. I just want something to throw in the truck for after work trips. I mostly fish in NJ in the Raritan bay / Sandy Hook areas. I would say I'm at least borderline googan and I am sick of 7' freshwater ugly stick with old crappy red spinning reel attached. I know I couldn't do much with it if I ever did hook anything of size. So lets hear it. What would you buy. I wouldn't mind hearing inexpensive reel suggestions as well. Bless their shiny little hearts...
eklutna
You are going to have to buy used or up your budget. Buying use is not a bad option.

greeny
I'm using a penn spinfisher 8' that I bought a couple years ago. I got it for under $50 from sports authority, and it has been fantastic for my purposes. I usually fish off the beach for stripers, but I've also used it for fluking and stripers off of a boat. My only complaint is that it has foam grips, which I find slightly more cumbersome than cork tape....I intend to strip off the foam and put on cork tape....If you want cork tape, the tica ueha series 8', which most people say is a decent rod, is selling in a similar price range. As far as reels go, i think Thumb-Burner has a shimano spheros 5000 for sale for $60. -Alex
plugmeister
Tica, Tsunami, Okuma---all well under $100 and all very satisfactory.
labrax
Just ran across a new Tsunami 3pc 8'6" rod for less than $70 up here in MA - thought it would be great, but just bought a similar one piece. For cheap - Okuma Solaris, Daiwa Sealine-X, or older Tica 2pc. A Tica Libra 4000 from the online store here would match up pretty well with some braid. Probably run you under $125 for a decent setup. Animal
Tica! It wouldn't pay you more to walk on water, than to wear a crown of thorns, It wouldn't pay me more to bury you rich, than to bury you poor...
jimmy z
Hi my friend. If you spend 100.00 bucks for the rod are you going to use that red reel? BTW, what kind of red reel is that? You can get an 8' Tica or Tsunami, both decent rods. There are options for you if your budget consious. blueshark
tica 1-3 oz 9ft 2pc is a nice plugging rod that can whip small stuff out and still have a bit of heave in the butt ...its a good cheap rod. under
erizerme
9' Okuma Solaris $69.00, Okuma Avenger 65 $45-$50, 20# Power Pro.( backing, pull off the RED REEL ) $20-$30. 40# Segure Floro Carbon for leader. I have beat the crap out of the above set up, not top of the line, but still going. If you can afford $ 100.00, go $150.00 and be happy. rollcast
A buddy of mine picked up a 7' Tica for between 50-60 bucks, it has a corkgrip on it and all. I might pick one up to use out on the kayak or just keep it in my truck for those last minute stops. As for a reel I would get a Diawa SS for under a hundred bucks. Nice simple reel with one of the best drags on the market in that price range, I have a few . Rollcast

Anyway I'm satisfied with my spinfisher but its a couple years old so its most likely different from the one mentioned in the above post
Grinder
GO with the Tica and a Penn reel. You will have Penns for the rest of your life with proper care. "spooks in providence, who'd a thunk..." - HugeDinghy
