greeny
hmm....so it seems i went a little too light with the mono . I guess I lucked out, but we were fishing less than 2 miles offshore in what looked and felt like completely open beach, with little to no drift. In any case what brand of line and what pound tests do you guys use? I was using hi-seas quatro in camo color. The only other line I had was 30 lb yozuri hybrid which I thought would spook fish away...which brings me to the question how line shy are fluke? also, what do you guys think of camo colored line? i've seen alot of people have good luck with it. Thanks! -Alex
GOTTOG
I wouldn't use Yozuri Hybrid if ya paid me. Total crap IMHO. Fishing the bay with bucktails less than 2ozs I use 14# Fireline with 15-20# Triple Fish or Andee mono leader. Heavier bucktails and deeper waters or around structure I up the mono to 25-30# Don't think they're all that line shy especially in Raritan Bay, but clearer waters fluro might help. Persoanlly, I feel I catch fine with regualr mono and don't care for fluro at all. Team Goats
Towne Cafe Sal
Hmm well I've used 50lb Big Game leader material and it didn't scare them away... Puffer Pounder
Billy 40
I fish 3' of water from teh beach, which can be dirty or clear using 3/8-5/8oz. I've been using 15# test, and if there are Blues around I bump up to 30 or 40#. From a boat, I NEVER use less than 20#, and prefereably 30#. I don't waste time with Fluoro, even on teh North Shore of Li where it is allegedly neccesary. Teh reason I use 15# test is I do not fish a dropper, and I don't have regular 20# line laying around. I dont' think it matters at all with Fluke, they are not line shy. Use what you are comfy with, if your afraid 15# is too light....well then it is. I like my leder to be able to hold a dropper loop and not become a mess after 2 fish. Camo line is great on PB's. If you get tangled, at least you know which is your line. GOTTOG
The Kil rigs we use are generally made out of 60# stiff mono shanks. Doesn't seem to be a problem for SG as she boats a good amount of fish For bucktailing, going a little lighter makes sense as you're trying to use the lightest jig you can, but know a few sharpies that just use 30# mono for leaders and have no issues. See in this weeks Fisherman reports quite a few mats were caught with bucktails and/or Gulp products Team Goats

Michael P
RB this AM. Pfffffffffffffffft! 3 Keepers and 3 shorts and a boofish. Oh well, had a nice run - hope tomorrow is better. Is it too much to ask to just breathe, be able to walk and go fishing?

Allen
11 keepers to just over 5# today on the snags; tough day had to work real hard for them - everything on bucktails w/ medium to long strips; teasers made a difference
Skolmann
Was invited on a trophy fluke hunt charter today out of Shark River Hills Marina. Once we broke Shark River Inlet we made a course southeast for the Sea Girt Reef. We fished various spots here the entire day. Early on the wind and current combined made for a fast drift. 4 ounce bucktails were attempted but we'd only get a few bounces before having to let out more scope. We had 2 nice fluke come unbuttoned on the first drift. deployed a drift sock and that slowed the dirft down enough where a 4 ounce Spro was fishable (barely). First fluke to be put on ice weighed in at #7.4. I took the next fluke of #5.25 and soon added a 18" er to the box. As I said we moved to various locals on the reef and they were very 'sticky', as evident by the 8 bucktails I lost alone. However we also seemed to get more strikes by this rough stuff. Alittle while later we had a #9 on ice. I was able to keep my Spro free of getting snagged long enough to hook into another nice #9er (my new personal best). We added a few more keepers during the day. When it was all said and doen we had 10 keepers on ice (2 #9s, a #7.4, a #5.25 and the rest in the 17-18" class). My personal tally was a #9, a #5.25 and 1 other keeper plus 2 shorts. Unfortunately we didn't enter into the Belmar Elks fluke tournament. We later learned that the winning fluke was #8.2 and the second was #7.2. If we had entered we would have taken first thru third plus all of the calcuttas. To ease some of the sting out of not entering the tournament, I bought 4 lobsters straight off the a lobster boat for $5/each. So I just had the pleasure of eatting a nice fresh fluke/lobster dinner.
