A buddy of mine just E-mailed me a story about a guy catching a 32#, 38" Black Drum in the Brigantine surf. Sounds like a great fish to take from the beach. Anyone else hear of surf-caught drum in NJ? I'd love to tangle with one of those brutes!

I remember the big drum taken from GK. Two guys fluke fishing managed to beach it. I thought that was just a fluke (no pun intended), as I'd never heard of black drum taken around Staten Island before. If I'm not mistaken, that year had extremely hot air/water temps.

There was a big drum--as I recall, 50-60 pounds or so--taken from FINS on Long Island in the summer of '99.

Bit of NY black drum trivia: If you catch one in NY, you are breaking the law if you let it go! Apparently, the clammers decided that anything that eats clams should be exterminated, and got the legislature to see things their way (a number of years ago). Those of you who, like me, flip snagged starfish back into the sea are also lawbreakers.

Rick7 saw the LARGE Black Drum pulled out right in front of him last year at IBSP. It was over 80 lbs and was weighed in at both Betty and Nicks and The New Dolphin in Seaside Park. I personally saw 2 Black Drum last year. One was about 30 lbs.

The large one I saw was at The New Dolphin. Bill said the guy that caught it didn't know what it was so he wanted to get rid of it.

So I see that black drum do occur around these parts on a yearly basis, although only as an incidental catch. I guess that targeting them would be no different than striper fishing with clams. I hope to be able to land one, so I'll keep fishing for stripers!

Thanks for all of the replies guys!

See you in Brig, Phil!
