Coolers Again

All coolers work pretty great if you pre- chill them and then add layers of ice cream salt to your final load open and close them as little as possible. I've had great luck with yeti and SSI coolers. Coleman and igloo are good too but you need to do more prep work and store them in the shade to get the most out of any cooler. I firmly believe a prepped and salted igloo will hang with a un prepped yeti kept in the shade. Ymmv.

I have 2 Yetis, an Orca, 2 colemans, and 3 igloos. The colemans and igloos have been relegated to family outings because they are lighter in weight and dont need to retain ice for more than a day.  If I am going fishing or camping, I take the yetis or orca, because I am more concerned with ice retention.  If someone asks to borrow a cooler, they get the igloos or colemans....nuff said.

Get a roto molded cooler and dont look back.

Igloo Marine is one step above regular  Igloo, extended stay  Freeze  I/2 Gal Milk /OJ containers, line bottom , some cover this with wet newspaper, Wife/GF put food containers and such and less chance for water to get in   rinse milk jug good and then use for drinking water as ice melts, in Boat Keep bottom of cooler up off deck  (old wet Towel) keep wet  towel on lid (White/reflect sun)

Pay a Buck More and get Ice from place such as Wa Wa whose ice is frozen  solid ,a machine that has fast turn over Ice (20lb for 2.50) is not frozen solid and an hour later Gone.

Hint Hint a small chest Freezer will pay for it self by freezing own ice,  1/2 gallon Ice Cream containers, Milk jugs, old  Metal ice cube tray, in FL it is so much Hotter Than the NE as we are closer to Equator  we need more ice

Buy what meets your needs. I have a yeti and find it heavy to carry around and exceeding my needs for a one day cooler. I have switched to a soft cooler (AO 24 qt ) 69 dollars and found it more then acceptable  for daily trips and easier to carry.

Field and Stream recently took a look at 25 top-end coolers.

If I recall correctly, the tests were length of time the ice lasted, how long it took to get up to the temperature where meat will spoin quickly (40F?) and the temperature where beer begins to taste warm (42F?).  Then they threw them all off a truck going at 45 mph to see how they stood up.

Cabelas' top-end cooler came out on top.  The only complaint was that the latches were a little stiff.  Yeti might have been #2.  I needed a solid cooler more for something to step down onto when getting into the boat (wanted a cooler rather than some sort of steps just for the dual function).  Bought a Cabelas 80 qt.  It seems decent.  Solid as a rock.  Put ice in it Monday around noon, and when I actually went out yesterday, there still wasn't enough room in the cooler to put the sea bass, as there was virtually no melting at all.

Impressions are short-term, as I just got the cooler earlier this month, but no complaints so far.

Just picked up my 3rd Yeti, Tundra 50 this time.  Already have the 125 and the Roadie 20.  Wanted a mid size cooler for shorter trips, so the 50 made sense.  It stays in the truck (Excursion).  Iced last Friday night, fished Saturday, drove home Sunday, left cooler in truck in the sun until Monday night.  Still full of ice.  Brought inside and placed by sliding glass door to deck in full sun.  Still has ice, even though most has melted.  Beers are better than ones from the fridge, LOL!

Bottom line?  Expensive, but you get what you pay for.  The 125 and 20 are going on 5 years now and get beaten on a regular basis, but still clean up to look like new, and have never had any performance concerns.

Thanks for the replies guys.  Two replies stick out, and the others are full of good information. I guess my question should have posed my purpose as was pointed out by Ghost. And because C. Witek lives in my clime his points were also well taken.

I want this cooler to hold ice and that's it. I have fridge with an over the top freezer that I always keep a bag of ice in for drinks. In a seven day stay traveling off the beach for ice is a pain. Additionally getting rigged up the day before is the norm, but getting ice at 4 or 5 is a chore. I already freeze 1/2 gallon waxed cardboard containers for fish ice, but it's that drink ice that needs to be pure. No one mentioned the top igloo cooler and being a Costco member their return policy is second only to Beans. Their reviews are very good, but I'd like some real world ones.

When I have a trip planned which is every Thrus- Sat or Fri - Sunday I take ice from my refrig ice maker storage throughout the week and put it in a cold large plastic bag in a chest freezer.

By the end of the week I have a lot of solid ice which lasts easily the three days ( with ice left over) in my blue and white RubberMaid coolers which sit in the sun on a beach most of the time.

I take three maybe four day trips so the RubberMaids have worked great.

I try to precool the coolers with freeze "things" that come with prescriptions and other things that are shipped cold!

Shag, I mentioned ""Igloo Marine Cooler" sort of top of line for Igloo, lot of sizes of course,  Sam's and Wally World

Drink ice , buy case of Bottled Water Take cap & save ,pour little water out then freeze ,put cap back on pure water,

Good point on pre cool the cooler with freezer packs..
