bclancy
I have 20+ year old 5 and 6 weights I use for my freshwater fishing. I feel they were perfectly decent rods for the money vs. available alternatives at the time I bought 'em. I've always felt the 6 wt. cast a little easier than the 5 wt. I have no experience w/ heavier weights or saltwater rods. Bob
JEFFSOD
Which model? I have an old backwater nine foot nine weight built before the company got sold. It is not heavy. Fast action.
Linesidesonthefly
I think thats the exact rod. International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers
stormy monday
I have a 9' 10 weight Backwater as well. It is one of the early versions with the spigot ferrule, which I don't love (broke 4 at first). Mine was an experiment, first one I built with single foots and I used some type of foam grip that I don't hate but future builds I stuck with cork. I don't find it that heavy, it has a lot of power, handles wind well and is a good fish fighter. If there are blues around it's my go-to rod. Linesidesonthefly
It's been kind of a hobby of mine to pick up older technology rods and reels and match them up with decent lines. I sold off all of my high end rods and reels a number of years ago. Nearly all but one of my reels are SA system 2's. Rods are Sage RPL and XP, Orvis Boron etc. Mostly 90's era sticks. Wouldn't mind stumbling into a killer deal on a Winston Boron and a Powell. In due time. I am having a blast striking deals. Ah geez, I had an old (early 90s) Powell hanging on my wall in Norway that was my LMB rod. It was pretty beat though and I destroyed it getting the reel seat off for re-use. Honestly I preferred the Diamondback as it had a faster action.... Find yourself an old JK Fisher GT40 for a real classic. Would love to have that one back... Mike Oliver
Depends what you are wanting in a rod. Not hard to pick it up and test cast it and compare to modern day rods. You can then decide if its worth taking a step back into time. Mike
Doublehaul2
Have a Diamondback "flawless" (6 wt) that set me back about 150$ brand new and has become my favorite rod. I have some high end rods too, but really enjoy casting this. Great little rod. I know they discontinued them some years back. They were promoted as a saltwater Rod, so I would imagine they went up to #10 at least, but not sure.
Linesidesonthefly
I don't believe those modern day rods are worth the prices they are going for. I think I paid $200 for my used XP. The new stuff isn't 3-4 times better. International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers
Mike Oliver
100% agree. Great value to be found in used market place. Sage's XP are great rods as are Xi3 and some of the Xi2's etc etc. You can even find two piece which I like a lot and their value has plummeted with the rise in popularity of 4 piece rods and blanks. Often you can find a rod that has hardly been used. People have such busy working lives they never get out to fish as often as they would like and then there is the rod collector who now and then gets a fit of conscience and sells rods off for good prices often barely used. Diamond Backs were popular over here and sold by I think Sue Burgess which became Fish Tec. Never cast one myself. Mike
RJ
I have a 2 piece, 9 foot 7 wt Diamondback that I picked up new in Syracuse NY in a sporting goods store that was closing its doors. $60.00 Very fast rod. Shoots the very well. Still in it original tube. I haven't pulled it out to fish it in a decade. I also have a Powell 7wt 2 piece, 9 ft. i won in a Altzimeners Tournament in New Smyrna Beach, FL It was "The Annual Hunt For Redfish" chairity tournament to raise money for that disease. It came with a 40+ tropical line and still casts very well. I know what you mean about the System2's. My best buy was a 12/13 S2 at a junk shop in Daytona. $50.00 in the box, never been used. Still never been used, but I might bring it out for deep dredging big flys for large striped bass this May. The drag is awesome. I like Tioga's and still have 5 of them 6,8 and 10 wts. FredA
For me the Backwater 2 piece is/was an incredible sweet casting rod. I didn't care as much for the 3 piece. Also, the 3 piece was susceptible to breakage at the ferrules as I recall.
belford perry
I presently have a custom made Diamondback 11wt 3-pc and I had an 8wt also. They have the beautiful green blank. I don't remember the name of it but it's not the drk gray backwater blank. They both cast excellent and I loved them. However, I do have to agree with the three pc breaking. The 8wt was unfortunately short lived (maybe a couple years or more). Tip broke and company had been bought by Cortland. Couldn't find a replacement off their shelves. They replaced it with their Stu Apte rod at that time. Didn't care for it and sold it. However the 11wt is an unreal rod to fish with! Yes it's a little on the heavy side but I'm a tile and marble setter so I don't have a problem. Anyway, originally I tried the backwater and didn't care for it as I did the former. IMO for the price, I only purchase TFO rods now. From saltwater single, TH, and even spey rods. I find their action to work best with my casting style. They also have a no ? asked return policy. $25 gets you a new rod. I've had and cast them all. Don't see a need to spend $600-$800 on a new rod.
