Getting unstuck

It's cold, snowing and really crappy weather. I thought this would be a good time for a few of us to toss around an idea.

Last year, for the first time, I got stuck on the beach with my Jeep and try as we did, we couldn't get it out till a tow truck (spelled $$$$$$$) came down and pulled me out.

Lately, lots of time in the house with all this crappy weather, I am sitting around trying to come up with something that I could carry around in the back of the Jeep to chuck under the tires to help me out of the sand, in the event that I were to get stuck again.

The best thing I could come up with is getting four 4 foot lengths of 1X12 and somehow fasten roofing shingle to them with the rough side up. If I were to get stuck, I was thinking of digging out enough of the sand in front of the tires and wedging the 1X12 in front of the tires. Then it should be a simple matter of driving up the little ramps and out of the trap.

What do you fellow beach drivers think?

the most unique thing that i have ever seen used to get out of the sand was 2 sections of chain link fence. laid down in front of the wheels, it doesn't move once you put it in place, provides traction, and disperses the load over a larger area. it was pretty slick.

A trick I've read about but never tried is water. Fill a bucket, we all carry white buckets right wink.gif, and soak the area where you're stuck. A twist on your current plan - 1x12's with furring strip ribs screwed in place and maybe longer than 4'. I have seen those work but they take up a lot of space in a vehicle. Other suggestions - carpet strips or the floor mats from your car/truck. With all due respect, I've never gotten stuck to the point of needing help because I try and sense when things are going wrong and stop before digging in any deeper. Airing down further helps and horsepower is not your friend. So far I've been lucky and have helped some unlucky ones, including a few Jeeps.

Check these out. Hard to find. Check out a military surplus store or catalogue.

Quote: Sized at 1220mm x 310mm x 25mm thick and weighing around 6kgs each, these sand ladders are a very useful item to have on board when you are stuck in mud or sand. Bolt 2 together and they can even double up as bridging ladders.

Manufactured from corrosion resistant fibreglass (GRP). They will not rot, corrode or rust and require no maintenance other than a hosing down. The gritted top surface will give an extended life and provide superior traction even in the worst of conditions.
