Tried them out and they fit fine. I wonder how these will effect sealing

Can I ask you a question, I did maintenance on my penn slammer 3, i ordered parts as well, I had a bad washer.  I think I put too much grease in and it's tight.  Did you add more penn grease.

If by washer you mean shim then grease won’t affect. If its too tight remove a shim but remove the thinnest one first and see how it feels

The bearings you received are not sealed they are only shielded 2 metal shields to keep out heave debris  the number on that would bearing would be XXX plus ZZ at the end of the number, ZZ stands for shielding not sealing you want sealing the bearing # would look like this XXX plus 2RS that stands for 2 rubber seals and the rubber can come in different types.

Send them back and get the right bearing, sealed bearing coast a little more, they will fit but won't last as water will get into them being there not sealed.

Them are much the same, one is plastic seal, one is metal seal

l have worked with ball bearings and sealing in the automotive manufacturing for years, there is a difference when it come to seals used.

The 2RS are sealed for life bearings i.e. the grease within the bearing cannot get out or contaminants get into the bearing and damage it. The ZZ are just a metal shield to stop larger contaminants damaging the bearing, water can get into the bearing and damage it.

Learn something news, thanks lp

lt's LB and your welcome.

Metal shield bearings have a gap between the metal shield and the inner race that's were the water will get in from.

Rubber seal, lip of seal will fit tight to the inner and outer race making it water tight.

I just ordered replacement bearings for my penn slammer III from mystic parts but got shielded bearings instead of the blue sealed bearings that came with the reel originally. Are these the same thing generally or did Mystic send me the wrong bearings ???

Those would probably fit the Fierce reel and many other reels that Penn makes that are unsealed get the right ones with Rubber seals.

The rubber sealed bearing will let water in. I was the largest Penn parts purchaser for 2 years in a row. The bearings you have will work fine. They are inside the reel with seals on the outside of the reel. If you wan want the rubber sealed bearings send an email to Mo at Mystic. She will send them to you.

The best way is to have open bearings. If water did get in them it can get out. That why Shimano uses open bearings on their conventional reels.

Those bearings should be 9x17x5. I have those with the rubber seals if you want me to send you some. I bet you only need the pinion bearings. They are more susceptible to water intrusion and rust. To check bearings hold it in one hand, use you index finger, push and turn the center race. If you feel anything it’s bad.

Can you measure them? If you don’t have calipers a kids ruler will work. The actual measurement will be undersized. You round up to the full number. Don’t buy from Penn. I get mine from Smooth Drag. All of her bearings are ABEC5.

I’d actually like some just because the shields are easier to remove on the “sealed” bearings. Yes, exactly... my pinion bearings were toast after some montauk wading. I didnt reel underwater or anything but water managed to work its way down the main shaft.

The bearings are for a 5500 slammer III . Theyre the same as the ones i have on my Penn Battle II 6000.  My slammer was very grindy after this fall season so i decided to service it.. i swapped bearings with the Battle II and grinding wasnt as bad but was still there. I swapped out the ar clutch as well but didnt help. I think some corrosion made its way down to the pinion gear even though i dont see any near the teeth..
