Kennyz55
I've fly fished freshwater nd saltwater fished from a boat. I'm renting n the Shrewsbury River and fishing from a neighbor's dock. I've a;so been fishing off Sandy Hook ocean and the bay. I caught a bunch of snapper blues and a few fluke. I'm reading Skinners book on fishing bucktail and Striper Strategy by Muller. What else can I do to improve my fishing?

SurfNbird
Something that never gets said that I think makes a big difference is make friends with really good fisherman. You can read and read and read and it's all really helpful but all the nuances that make a difference for success in general or a particular area can really only be learned from others. i have been lucky to fish with really good anglers and even a couple of renowned fisherman and the tiniest details I've picked up from these guys is mind blowing Ofc not everyone is liberal with this info which is why you should rub elbows with knowledgable guys that know how to catch. Besides that the most important thing is to go out and fish. The more time you put in the sharper you will get

Kennyz55
Where do I find the rules? How do I owe everyone a Joke? Here's 1: The IRS decides to audit Grandpa, and summons him to the IRS office. The IRS auditor was not surprised when Grandpa showed up with his attorney. The auditor said, ‘Well, sir, you have an extravagant lifestyle and no full-time employment, which you explain by saying that you win money gambling. I’m not sure the IRS finds that believable.’ ‘I’m a great gambler, and I can prove it,’ says Grandpa. ‘How about a demonstration?’ The auditor thinks for a moment and says, ‘Okay. Go ahead. ‘ Grandpa says, ‘I’ll bet you a thousand dollars that I can bite my own eye.’ The auditor thinks a moment and says, ‘It’s a bet.’ Grandpa removes his glass eye and bites it. The auditor’s jaw drops. Grandpa says, ‘Now, I’ll bet you two thousand dollars that I can bite my other eye.’ The auditor can tell Grandpa isn’t blind, so he takes the bet. Grandpa removes his dentures and bites his good eye. The stunned auditor now realizes he has wagered and lost three grand, with Grandpa’s attorney as a witness. He starts to get nervous. ‘Want to go double or nothing?’ Grandpa asks ‘I’ll bet you six thousand dollars that I can stand on one side of your desk, and pee into that wastebasket on the other side, and never get a drop anywhere in between.’ The auditor, twice burned, is cautious now, but he looks carefully and decides there’s no way this old guy could possibly manage that stunt, so he agrees again. Grandpa stands beside the desk and unzips his pants, but although he strains mightily, he can’t make the stream reach the wastebasket on the other side, so he pretty much urinates all over the auditor’s desk. The auditor leaps with joy, realizing that he has just turned a major loss into a huge win. But Grandpa’s own attorney moans and puts his head in his hands. ‘Are you okay?’ the auditor asks. ‘Not really,’ says the attorney. ‘This morning, when Grandpa told me he’d been summoned for an audit, he bet me twenty-five thousand dollars that he could come in here and pee all over your desk and that you’d be happy about it.’ Don’t Mess with Old People! Buckscorider
Great joke! Get yourself some SP minnows. Retrieve slow with some twitches, when you feel the undertow pulling the SP back, let it sit in the current. Good luck! Crushed barbs save fish, keep that rod bent! tcal4404
Welcome! Skinner's book is a good start. I'd focus your efforts on bass/blues at this point in the season. Like others have said, spend time out there, watch what others are doing, keep your eyes open for birds working, bait moving through. What is your rod/reel/line setup? Also, learn how to tie a twisted dropper loop and incorporate teasers into your setup. Some lures to think about: 1oz bucktail w/ a curly tail (andres or smiling, not spro-designed for veritcal jigging), heavier weight when the water is really moving. Want to make sure it just taps the bottom, doesn't drag metal tins (ava jig, crippled herring, lots to choose from. From 1oz to 3oz depending on your setup) plastic swimmer (sp minnow, bomber, mag darter) black/purple color at night is very productive Swim Shad (Storm), easiest lure to build confidence with Popper for topwater when you see fish blitzing or rough water
tcal4404
Oh, and watch skinner's videos on youtube on working specific lures. Just don't expect to catch even remotely as many fish as he does

I've been using these life like minors and spearing I've caught in my home made minnow traps. LOL
Buckscorider
I've been using these life like minors and spearing I've caught in my home made minnow traps. LOL Nice trap! I'm sure those little fishy's have a use... maybe for fluke? You mentioned you may fish SH and I'm assuming you want to catch a Striper, so I made my recommendations. Good luck! Crushed barbs save fish, keep that rod bent!
