Is it port orford? I would think it would be fine if it’s not full of knots or splits. Any pics of it? Definitely 2x6? Just seems kinda thick for decking

I've seen a few cedar decks made of 2x's, although 5/4 stock (for cedar) is much more common.

That's a good looking draw knife...8" ?....wood be a good one to fully restore...it's what I use to make banana plugs with.

No **** , I came across one of those a few years ago, I had it hanging on my wall in my fishing room (Shop)

I didn't know it could be used for plug making , just thought it was cool looking.

Very kind of you to offer, Mike, but I'll use one of Mon Oncle's (French for "My Uncle", which is how I always referred to my God Father) shaves.  This one is "APPROVED DUNLAP TOOLS".

Mike,

It *is* sharp, like all of his tools were.  Takes a ferocious edge with just a few passes of a fine file, followed by two or three passes of a knife steel.

They are amazingly handy, even in this day of 20v power tools!

Although I don't (yet) have one, spoke shaves were usually used on what was called a "shaving horse" or a "spokeshave mule" which were basically a foot-treadle-operated wooden vise to hold your piece in place, yet allows one to quickly re-position the piece being shaved.

Oh thanks....blade has a big chip in it.

How can anyone help but appreciate a mate who's kind enough to offer a tool with a chipped blade?

It is indeed 2 x 6 material. I have already replaced a few boards. First owner of the home was none other than Sharpe James, former mayor of Newark, before his "fall from grace". He had the deck built. There's a story about who did the work, but I've no confirmation so I won't relay it here.

It's all premium clear stuff. No knots.
