Rmarsh
I have caught several stripers over 30# using a live eel with a four ounce sinker on a fishfinder rig, and the rod in a sandspike. I know it goes against conventional wisdom, but it does work. I use a bailess van stall, but a bait runner works better for this method. I liveline them unweighted too, cast and retrieve, and actually prefer it, but sometimes after an hour or two my back starts to hurt, then I just like to sit by a fire sipping a cold beer and wait with anticipation Good luck with whichever method you choose! passiton
Are the eels you use for bait the same eels that I catch in the Delaware up here at night? They're so plentiful up here that I've always thought about loading up on a bunch to use as bait for my trips to the salt. NOBODY here has a pass to blow out someone else's candle in order to make theirs shine brighter. TLDig[

No difference, didn't they just put a moratrorium on eels. if not I think they are considering it.
Pilar
Hello , I have caught striped bass on eels from party boats, charter boats, and jetties. I would say that the conditions you fish should dictate how you fish a eel for stripers. If your off a rock pile a long bullet shaped weight works well for me, because I like to cast them and then let the eel drift into the current. I have also used circle hooks, which allows you to reel down on the striper when they take the bait, don't set the hook. I have also used a fish finder rig on boats and have been successful. As for putting the eel on the hook, I would first break their back, by slamming them against a rock. I would go through the lower jaw and out the corner of the eye. I would also recommend putting them in a plastic baggy and hook them through the bag. You can also put the eel on ice, which will make the eel slow down some. Don't put the eel in the water if they are acting like they will twist up. Also, please properly dispose of all trash. Tight lines, Vic
