afterhours
Thanks everyone. I should make covers like they do for golf clubs, I have a few broken tips. When traveling with rods on roof rack I use cut offs from old a/skins gloves with an elastic. I know the odds of road debris hitting them are long, but I don't want to find out how long . blackdogfish
Just tried to remove the tip off my rod after heating pretty good with hot hair dryer. Slight twist when pulling and the rod broke about 3' down from tip. I' m frustrated at myself, frustrated at Tsunami and now I have a 9'-9" rod. I believe in paying as much as I can afford for my tools and keeping them as long as possible. Maybe rods are just meant to be disposable items now.... That tip should have come off easier. In the future if I have a custom built rod, can I expect to get 10-20 years from it? The Great Big Jig in the Sky...Shine on you crazy diamond jig. johnnycakes
Your rod did not break from heating the tip with a hair dryer. It was either knicked at that point or when trying to twist off the tip you put too much pressure on that one point. Did you grab the rod itself with pliers or something like that? plays well with others
blackdogfish
Was holding the rod itself in one hand... just under the second to last guide, and the tip in a rag, in my other hand. The tip WAS turning... it's not like I was reallu twisting the whole rod... but it did make a little snap noise, and that's all she wrote. Is this just because this airwave rod is another piece of Chinese junk? Would a Lami blank do the same thing? The Great Big Jig in the Sky...Shine on you crazy diamond jig. Stuff happens , bad luck - but not all is lost ; just put on anther tip guide [ maybe remove the second guide if it broke there ] and use the rod for baiting or tossing heavier lures , a loaner , etc . Don't chuck it out !! When I replace tip guides , I like to do so with a SIC tip guide - because it is the top guide that cops the most friction and where the line wears most . SIC guides cost a bit more [ not much , really ] , but your line will love this simple mod .

blackdogfish
Barramundi Can you suggest a source for SIC? Is 3" off the rod length going to make a big difference? Since Im om the Family Plan, I cant afford a new rod now. The Great Big Jig in the Sky...Shine on you crazy diamond jig.

Since Im om the Family Plan, I cant afford a new rod now. You can order it from Mudhole or just take the rod to any good builder and he can get one and istall it. Won't cost much ... $ 25 or less I'm guessing. If you are in my area at all I can recommend someone. What rod is it? .. did not see that posted. I am in Oz so hard to advise , but **** and Mudhole are rod building component suppliers in USA , among many others . I doubt 3 " cut from the tip will make much difference at all . I have only built a couple of rods [ baitcasters , very long ago on ugly blanks ], and I actually chopped a inch or two off the tips so as to stiffen up the blank's action for lure tossing ; to give it some snap , looking for a bit more distance ... Many rod builders modify blanks to obtain a desired action ...
