abraves4410
looking to expand my fluke tackle a bit. ive been using a lamiglas competitor 5 power rod for bay fluking and i love it, but it just doesnt have the guts for the bigger fish out front. the dogfish i was hooked up on the other day were really pushing its limits. that said, im looking for a little stronger rod, one that would be a double duty rod for fluking out front and some striper/blue action. I was looking at the mud hole IS701M and IS701H, since they come as a full kit that would be perfect for my first build. The M is rated 1-2 oz, and the H is 1 1/2 - 3 oz. Would the M be any more powerful than the lami im using now? i really like that it comes in colors, but i fear it wont have the power that i need. I know that the H would be strong enough, but i dont want to be fishing with a broom stick either. I know this is probably not that easy of a question for you guys, but im hoping someone has experience with these blanks here. Thank you guys in advance. ...... taz575
The clear finish on those blanks is pretty bad! The clear coat flakes off easily and when you clean up excess epoxy with denatured alcohol, it will either lift the finish or leave white dots all over the blank if you use too much DNA. This only applies to the clear ones, not the colored ones. I have built up a blue M and the color was awesome, but the rod felt lighter power wise. I made up a test rod with the H and it has more backbone, but the finish really bothered me. The H is only available in the clear finish, not the colored ones. These had a good bit of flex to them, too. The Blue and green are more of a translucent/clear colored finish and the other ones look to be more of a paint finish. The Pink and Purple ones are a paint type color, no graphite patterns shows through at all. The price is right, but the clear finish on the H is pretty poor IMHO. It's rated as a fast action, but the rod flexes pretty far down the blank; nice for a dead sticking rod, but if you need to use more weights, it's harder to set the hook. Nice for a spinning rod, but I prefer a faster action or stiffer lower end of the rod. Maybe look at one of the Lamiglas Inshore Classic IC84MH or IC84H. A Mag Bass type rod should be nice as well, maybe a 845 or 846 if you are looking for more power? St Croix Avid or Premier 7' Heavy Fast Action also makes a sick fluke rod. I used the 70HF SC3 as a fluke rod with up to 6 or 8oz in the Eastern LIS area.
abraves4410
iwas actually looking at several of those blanks that you mentioned, but just really have the funds to justify a $100 + blank right now. it sounds like the 701H is exactly what i wanted except for the clear coat issue. hopefully someone else has worked with them and had a better experience. ...... taz575
Look at the Batson RX6 or RX7, 845 or 846 blanks, or the RX4 15-30# blanks. The RX4 is a slower action, but still has some power to it.
rock74
Ive built a few of those blanks the M will not have the guts to do what you want it to do, i use them for fresh water bass fishing buzz baits and it don't really have the back bone in the butt to really put the boots to them they are a slower action blank and the casting weight is way over rated on them. I built a pair of H's for heavy fresh water pulling bass out of cattails and reeds although Ive used them for fluking with up to 5 ounces it will never be my go to blank for fluke- im not trading them in for my inshore lite, The H's lack the back bone with that weight and like taz said i had the same issues with the finish mine came from the factory with the white spots where the grips would be and got worse when i cleaned them with DNA. Al Goldberg
I have been using a Batson SWS70L for deepwater fluking with great success. Its a composite blank that can handle up to 8 ounces.
Billy 40
- im not trading them in for my inshore lite,. For Ocean Fluking the Seeker Hercules Inshore Lite is hard to beat...but I'm biased, lol. How much are you looking to spend on the blank? IT will cost you a LOT more money and a crapload more time trying to save a few dollars up front and building the wrong rod. If you're going to spend teh time to wrap and fish a rod, spend a few more dollars and get teh right blank off teh bat.I have Inshore Lite kits (complete set ups) which are $133, but if you're only looking to spend $50 on a set up then it's way out of your price range "the internet is the greatest platform for people who don't know anything, to tell people how much they don't know, to people who don't know anything and believe everything they read." -Billy 40:
abraves4410
i was looking to keep the costs relatively low since im only working part time right now. my mom actually surprised me with an offer to purchase me a rod for just graduating, and i went with the mojo bass at a local store. it feels a lot better than the lami i am currently using. im gonna save up some money and make this a build for the winter time, so i will be expanding the budget a bit. the batsons seem real nice, and were actually one of the first blanks i had seriously thought about. I ill also be looking into the hercules, these blanks kept coming up in my searches so they must be pretty good. is there any consistency with the lure ratings or is a subjective thing? both of the rods i have now are rated to 1 1/2 ounces, but the mojo is much stronger and has a ton of backbone compared to the lami. this makes shopping through a catalog pretty difficult... ...... Billy 40
I wouldn't use all the posts and comments and other people's opinions as my sole source to base my decision on. Use tha tas a general guideline to give oyu options on what YOU like. Ther hercules blanks keep poppin up in searches becasue the guy who helped designed it spends a lot of time on teh computer answerring questions, lol. The INshore Lite is accurate for conventional Fluke fishing and general bottom fishing. IT is ideal for 3-8oz dragging bait for Fluking, and for Blackfishing it will handle 10oz no problem. If you are lookign to use it castin glures at striped Bass, it will cast 1-3oz. Ratings are subjective, and are different basedon wha thte rod is being used for, and whatmanufacturer decides is ideal. Shopping through a catalouge is impossibl eunless you are familiar with a particulat Manu and how they rate their rods "the internet is the greatest platform for people who don't know anything, to tell people how much they don't know, to people who don't know anything and believe everything they read." -Billy 40:
Al Goldberg
I have both the inshore lite Hercules, which is a fabulous ocean fluking rod, and the Batson SWS70L which is less than half the price of the Hercules. Both will do the job, however you need to decide on whether you want to spend the money for a Ferrari or a Chevy.
SurffisherMike
i have the inshore lite. that kite billy is talking about sounds like a good deal. that heavy mudhole blank is not that great. i build one , stiff no life to it, didnt really like it at all. the hercules cant definitely handle more than than blank and feels better even at lighter weights
secjurny
I would agree with Billy... I built a couple hercules lites spinning and use them for everything from blacks to bass, blues, and fluke...you really can't go wrong with the hercules................ The Lure Washer
if you like glass check out this blank from Mudhole. Its the SPSWB7M. I built one and then the heavy version as well in the 20-40 class and they are pretty great rods! The 15-25lb class rod is a great fluke and bass rod and the other is gonna be better for diamond jigs in the 6-10oz range. if you want I can post a pic for ya. BranfordJeff - I'd hit it like a drumset in the special ed classroom.
