Outriggers

Recommended Posts

I stumbled across an outrigger system on ebay. It uses 2 rod holders with PVC pipe that fits inside them tightly and then you drill a hole through and stick a pin through it, and it holds it on there. The rod holder that comes with it is one that adjusts to different angles but locks in so you could lift them up to paddle and then let them down when you want to fish. I will most likely be making one of these systems in the near future. Has anybody else made something like this before?

By using outriggers I assume you will be trolling two or more rods. I've done it but it's gotten me into trouble on more than one occasion, you are not on the stern of a boat here. Tangles from running fish and trying to clear a line and then ya may have to paddle... I'll troll one rod and find it a lot more enjoyable, my 2 cents.

I originally built them to be used with my Pygmy Borealis XL kayak. I built them from 6061 Aluminum tubing, 1/4" flat stock and Scotty rod holder parts. The floats are boat fenders.

Best outrigger discussion ever on the internet, just check here: http://www.stripersonline.com/surfta...t=freedom+hawk

I myself just bought a FH and am extremely happy with both stability and paddling. Admittedly not a rocket, but fast enough in open water and lightning on the flats with a push pole. I didn't sit down for 5 minutes yesterday in back at IBSP.

They were easy to make. 6061 Aluminum tubing and 1/4' plate. Boat fenders and two scavenged Scotty elbows. They fold up or can be pivoted back to set on the deck. Powder coated too. Nice and stable on the lakes around here.

can you leave them down when you paddle or is the drag too much?

On the Pygmy they sat about an 1-2" above the water and cause no drag. They are there more to keep from tipping over when fly casting.

I am really not sure if I will need them in my PT-13?

The Wife and I were out in the ocean today(First time for both of us) and we were both totally comfortable. I was in the PT-13 and she was in the Pygmy Borealis without the outriggers, both of us totally comfortable.
