Joe- you did not blow it, don't say that. the shirts have always been awesome. you did waht you had to do, and had to follow guidlines given to you. i appreciate the honest feedback by those who gave their opinions. all i wanted was whether people liked the shirts this year or not. i don't really care if people agree or disagree with me, everyone is entitled to their opinion and should be able to voice it without being chastized and told they didn't give enough to charity, or they missed the point of ht charity, etc. i'm just trying to get the general consensus on the reception of the shirts with the anglers who were there, not their moral values. for the martyrs and sinners and trolls who turned this into a discussion into something about $$$$ and charitys, and other off-topic nonsense:

brine overnight. look in this forum, there are some good recipies from a few years ago on smoking fish and brines. i use very little salt in my brine. just did these today as a matter of fact. first half of a 16 fillet batch.

So what did everyone think about this years tournament shirts? Personally I am not a fan, and honestly i think the shirt was a total bust. let's start with the pink. I have no problem with the pink. I have no problem with there being a big pink CFR logo, since cfr is about breast cancer and breast cancer ribbons are pink. that's fine. I personally think tho, that the pink outlining of everything on the front was over the top. 2nd, there's no fish, no reference to fishing or anything else to make it a "fishing shirt", other than saying jbay kayak fishing tournament and teh pink blob thats part of the logo. I don't know about you guys but i keep shirts from tournaments(whether they are boat or kayak etc), and it's something nice to wear when fishing or out with the guys. The only tiime this years shirt is getting worn is when the girlfriends daughter wants to wear it. 3rd, if I was a sponsor, specifically st. croix, i'd be PO'D . Other than the banners hanging at the tournament, the shirt is the main way that large sponsors get recognized for their donations/contributions to the tournament. on this years shirts, all the logos are tiny, i mean TINY. the resolution is horrible, and st. croixs logo is so dark it looks like a black oval. some logos have text that is unreadable. I didn't know until last minute if I was going to be able to fish the tournament, so i was a day-of registrant. I wasn't expecting a packed captains bag or anything spectacular like that, but when they literally handed be an empty blue bag and a pink shirt it sure sent me walking away from the registration booth with my head shaking. If someone knows the people at CFR, I think they definatly oughta rethink next years shirts. flame me if you want, but i'm just speaking my opinion, and from what i heard at the tournament, the opinion of a lot of others as well.

don't worry about repairing the tube if it's cut. the heavy stainless wire keeps everything together. it won't go anywhere because it can't slide over the hook, or the swivel in front. i've used tubes that were cut into 3 and 4 sections and still caught plenty of fish.

Kayak Carl's Tube and Worm
aweiss4428 replied to tuntini31's topic in Kayaking and Kayak Fishing Forum
I used Tmans a few times and no more. I found that since they don't "hold" shape, that probably 6 out or 10 times, when I would lob out the tube, it would bend back around itself, and hook right above the swivel. I lob my tube out and move forward, slowly letting out line till i'm at where I want to be.when I get the amoutn of line out, i engage the reel oor flip the bail. now you hopefully feel the tube gong through the watter funny. if not, you go on and on with no hits, bring it in to check for seaweed and find that it's fouled itself. Other brands of tubes I have used have not done this, including carls, and some commercially available ones. Tmans were the only ones that fouled and I didn't like it. *note, unlike shipwreck I DO have an interest in kayak carls tubes, so i just want to make that clear. -
Right on Brothers. To the average person on the street they hear someone is a union employee and they say, oh that guy's got it made, he's getting everything for free, just another lazy @#!*% etc etc. However they never bother to ask that person about their union employment or(heaven forbid) take some initiative and do some research on their own. I just recently became a union employee through a business acquisition. It has the potential to be the best thing that happened to me and my family, but long term. Just because i'm in the union doesn't mean my life is a cakewalk now. as it stands now I am the lowest on the seniority ladder. If layoffs are justified at work, I'm the first to go- not the guy who goofs off all day or the guy with less experience who makes more. The union is there to protect me from being fired for BS reasons(ever had an employer who has you sign an agreement that they can terminate you at any time for any reason? I have and so did all the employess at my previous job) well with the union, your employer needs to have legitamte reasons for firing someone. Also, just because the union is there to protect me, doesn't mean I don't have to do anything. I have maintain training standards, make sure that I'm elligible for certain work duties, etc. If I don't do those things, i'm not holding up my end of the deal. yes, i am one of the extremely fortunate ones, that does have the ability to receive (nearly) free healthcare for me and my family for the rest of our lives after I retire. But, that's as it stands now. In 20 years, that could change and I'd be SOL, plus you're not eligible for retirment before 25 years of service. Also for our pensions/annuities, that funding is coming mainly from our paychecks. Rather than be paid XX dollars and hour, you're paid XX-5 dollars and that 5 goes into the pension fund which is then administered to get the greatest returns on the investment. There's no guarantee on those investments. if the stock market goes down, we can lose money. Last year, our contract had to be amended and the employees had to give up some scheduled pay raises and other benefits so that losses could be made up in the other funds. one other thing about how people always @#!*% about seeing union employess all standing around watching one guy work. i'm not going to try and address other people, but here's something i can offer as an example. when we pump out a propane tank at work, it's a minimum of a 3 man job, 2 service men and 1 bulk truck driver. there is little "work" to be done actually, it consists primarily of hooking up a few hoses and screwing in an adapter to the tank. 2 servicemen are needed though because of the extremely dangerous nature of the job, if something were to go wrong(and it has), someone could potential suffer sever frostbite/frozen limbs, suffocate, or there could be a massive fire/explosion. two men are needed in case something happens, the other can call for help. At some point, a driver is needed to transfer the liquid from the tank to his truck, but he doesnt have to do anything but sit there and wait. at one point for about 20-40 minutes, there ends up being 3 guys standing there watching a pump run, liquid run through a sightglass, and the needle on the tank move down. inevitably, this is when Bob Villa the construction foreman saunters over, makes some @#!*% crack about how many guys does it take to change a lightbulb, and walks away chuckling to himself. the sad part is if the guy only bothered to ask why there were 3 guys there, he might actually learn and understand something.

tube and worm down deep
aweiss4428 replied to timeforsurf's topic in Kayaking and Kayak Fishing Forum
use what mullet showed, a weighted keel. allows you to use unweighted tubes without a weight on the keel if you're shallow, or just add more weight and more line in the water to get deeper. -
auto censor has no love.
-
absolutely right. that being said, I always have atleast 1 tube in the water tho. the only thing i have more confidence in, is a live eel
-
interesting. even for vessels <16' and under man made power?
-
i just lob it out behind me, let out a little line(as i;m moving) and just go at a slow clip about 1-1.5kts. thats when fishing from about 2-15 feet of water. deeper and i'll let out more line and usually use a weighted tube or a rudder with weight. i like pink/bubblegum tubes, followed by red.
