wilddante
There's a reason why they call him "Tom Terrific". Possibly one of the best songwriters of my time - IMO. How many don't know he wrote "Jersey Girl"?
lichum
voice is unique, he sounds like a caveman singing, but in the modern era I like him for his uniqueness. "Who is John Galt?" Who? You?
bat guano
One of his best albums IMHO From Nighthawks At The Diner Lyrics to On A Foggy Night : on a foggy night, an abandoned road in a twilight mirror mirage with no indication of a service station or an all night garage, I was misinformed I was misdirected cause the interchange never intersected leaving me marooned beneath a bloodshot moon all upon a foggy night, on a foggy night an abandoned road, in a blurred brocade collage, is that a road motel? I can't really tell, is that what you might call some kind of a vacancy lodge cause there's no consolation, what kind of situation to be aimlessly skewed amidst a powder blue? no tell tail light clue spun like the spell you spin this precarious pandemonium I'm stranded, all upon a foggy night all upon a foggy night on a foggy night
Flynn-S.
A dear bud of mine, originally from the Red Bank, NJ area, is doing a Tom Waits tribute every Wed. at a pub in Philly called Time. I checked it out last Wed. and he has a really neat thing going. I'm not a big fan of TW, but if you are, and you are in the area, check him out. Goes by the name of Brian Seymour, he does. Ebbtide231
Saw TW in the Beacon back in the late 80's. Awesome show. Nighthawks Small Change Blue Valentine... Shoot, they all good.
Vermonter
voice is unique, he sounds like a caveman singing, but in the modern era http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9ZmqbcBsTAw 9ZmqbcBsTAw Yeah, between the voice and the choice of songs/lyrics, he went his own way musically. Bunch of us used to take a winter break for a week in Feb, Myrtle Beach for golf, and a good friend I shared the driving with was a huge Waits fan. Brings back a lot of good memories, flying down interstate 95 late at night in the dartk, that growl of a voice and the lyrics filling the vehicle. Only time I saw him live was in the late 70's, chance encounter when I didnt know anything about him.
Fun King
Tom likes to fish, too. I think he lives in NJ. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XUCuAgFjcM8 XUCuAgFjcM8
Mega Bight
If you can find a copy Tom Waits appeared on an episode of 'Fishing with John', a cult television show back in the early 90s. Very funny episode.
jborg
Director JIm Jarmusch has used him in a bunch of his film. He was funny in "Coffee and Cigarettes" w/ Iggy Pop.

Bonefish79
My wife is always giving me those "What are you listening to!" comments. It's not a question, it's a smack-down of my taste in music. Tom Waits gets that comment every time (along with Buck Owens and Carl Perkins). "If you think fly fishermen are strange, try having a conversation with a mushroom picker." John Gierach
