Montauk Project Real or Fake
NewestGuyOnStripersOnline replied to SJ from the Bay's topic in Main Forum
A Blackhawk. We landed so a crew chief could take a leak and I was spacing out just looking at the sky when I saw it. We had NVGs on so the bloom made it look like a tube with windows. I have a *lot* of time looking through NVGs and I’d never seen anything like it until that point. Got a rough location and time then called approach when I landed, they said they didn’t see anything unusual. Saw a picture of it a few days later in some article about astronomy, apparently it’s pissing off space nerds because it’s cluttering up their telescopes. -
Montauk Project Real or Fake

Haha, I saw them while flying one night. Me and the whole crew **** our pants! Got operations to log it as “Pilot observed UFO” and everything! Totally made me believe and I told everyone I could the next few days.... then I found out about SpaceX. -
Convince me to fish at night
NewestGuyOnStripersOnline replied to worldsworstangler's topic in Main Forum
Same. I fish at night because that’s when the kids are asleep. It’s nothing earth shattering or terribly dangerous, just stay off the jetties and out of the water. Wear a headlamp, but only turn it on when absolutely necessary. You’ll be fine. Wear a knife though. Plenty of weirdos cruising the beach after sunset.- 59 replies

Yeah they’re kicked it up a notch in the organ harvesting business too. I’m DONE with Chinese reels. It’s a shame because I liked Penn and want a Van Staal, but I can’t in good conscience support the CCP any longer.

Wow, that’s a hell of a write up. That will give me a lot of directions to go as far as future reading. Thanks man! I’m excited to start learning the ropes there. The few times I tried I got skunked, but that was just throwing some bait in and keeping an eye on the rod while playing with my kids. I was able to catch when I worked on it. This was all high tide though, what about low tide? I learned I needed to put a float on my bait to keep the horseshoe crabs off it. I casted out as far as I could and occasionally I could see he float break the surface at low tide - couldn’t be more than 2’ deep all the way at the edge of my casting ability. Is it possible to catch at low tide or is it just too low? What about walking out there 50 yards or so and casting from there?

Gents, I’m sucking sand in the Middle East for the next 6 months or so doing army stuff. Most of my free time is spent here dreaming about fishing, but one topic that I can’t find much on is the Delaware Bay. I’ve already read everything the search feature will turn up, but I’d like to see a little more. Once I get back I get back I intend to spend about 2 months fishing the bay day and night mostly from the shore (maybe a little from an aluminum boat) primarily around Prime Hook. Can anyone give me an idea what works there? I was able to catch a few sharks at night last summer, but that was using squid as bait. Any lures work? What about during low tide? Water seems to be no more than 2 feet deep, would a small topwater get me anywhere?

Was at Cabella's today looking at the whole arsenal of Kastmasters. Everything but the 3 oz was made in China. The packaging was the same minus the small "Made in the USA" at the bottom. Noticeable differences in the quality of the product though. I went ahead and bought the 3oz - F China

What is the best method for tying on teasers?
NewestGuyOnStripersOnline posted a topic in Main Forum
Been doing a lot of reading regarding knot and leader strength. I've settled on the Trilene knot for all my leaders and up to this point I've been using a dropper loop for the teaser. Looks like the dropper loop causes a serious decrease in line strength though. I read that some people use a three way swivel at the top of their setup; one to the mainline, one to the teaser, and one to the lure. Is this the preferred method for maintaining as much strength as possible? Does the teaser seem to catch on the leader more often? What are the ideal lengths for both lines off of the swivel? Thanks for the help! -
Don't have one, wish I did, but to the max extent possible I'm done funding the CCP. I'll buy my high end stuff from anywhere but China if I can help it.

Reading while quarantined

That's my next book for sure. -
Yeah, I'll be buying something else for that reason.

I have a reel from them, bait runner type. I like it a lot - I don't treat it well at all but it keeps on chugging.

Water Resistant Night Viision Goggles

Nope, just got shot at. Honestly though, I have serious doubts that that video was shot using NV. I think the dude just put a green filter on the video after recording it. -
Water Resistant Night Viision Goggles
NewestGuyOnStripersOnline replied to salt deficient's topic in Main Forum
Any standard PVS-14 (the basic NV monocular) is resistant to the point you'd require for fishing in even the worst conditions. They're 2,500-3,500 new depending on quality of intensifier tube. Never fished with one, although I've done almost everything else. Now's a bad time though, prices have gone UP. -
Title pretty much says it all. I have been for a while now on my primary rod; an 8' spinning setup. No reason other than when I switched to braid saw how thin the equivalent to my mono was and thought "Nah", then bought something that looked a little more substantial (50lb). It's worked fine, caught a few big fish that I was probably otherwise not equipped to handle. I can see that it'd hold less line, but I haven't been spooled yet, also maybe a little more drag from current and wind, slightly less casting distance too. It just seems like a good trade to have an easier time tying knots, better abrasion resistance (reeled a big one in hanging literally by a few threads), next to no chance of losing a fish due to inadequate line strength, and maybe, if I'm real dumb and forget to open the bail - keeping my lure. Anything I'm missing? About to spool up a Penn casting special and trying to decide what to use.

Anyone fish the DE bay beaches?
NewestGuyOnStripersOnline replied to NewestGuyOnStripersOnline's topic in Main Forum
Which months can I expect each species? Any bait stores to recommend? -
OK, thanks for all the advice gents. Watched some videos and did some testing of my own. The snell definitely seemed to offer more consistent hookups (pulling it through a glass over and over) vs the Trilene, don't know if that translates to fish but I'm guessing it does. After that I tied two hooks to each other; one end snell, one trilene and pulled till it broke. 5 out of 5 times the line failed at the snell end, leaving the coil intact on the shank. This was a VMC hook with a straight eye. Think I'll be going snell for circles, trilene for everything else. Now I'm curious about my main line and whether I should use Palomar or Trilene where my main line terminates at the swivel.

Going to play a big role in my future fishing after mostly being an NJ guy. I've read everything I can on here using the search function but couldn't find as much info as I'd like. Looking to fish from the shore, Slaughter to Broadkill - what bait or lures and for what species should I expect? Looks like I'm mostly going to be going after Black Drum? If anyone wants to IM me a Phone # it'd be great to talk for a few minutes about your experience. Thanks

Title pretty much says it all. Looking to use circles for the first time this spring - finally learned how to tie a snell knot (with the help of a cocktail straw) and now I'm hearing about how badass the Trilene knot is. Looking to tie 50# fluro to fairly large-eye'd circle hooks. Which should I go with?

Any idea where they're in stock?
