Fishing Charters

If you are going to spend the money on a charter ... You don't look at how much money per pound you pay for a fish. If that is the case, we all would be paying boat loads of money per pound in order to recoup the tackle cost , transportation cost and what your time is worth. Most of us fish for more reasons than a low cost meal. The price per pound for catch and release fishing is infinity per pound. I think most of us will welcome the stricter regulation put on striped bass I order to preserve the species.

I do't think the regulation will effect the decision to hire a charter or not.

Don't stop ... Retrieving ...

Agree it's not like two fish covered the cost is it? Might hurt but I think they'll either see more 1/2 day bookings or make a quicker switch over to another available species as most have been doing all along. Limit out on bass, onto fluke, etc....... at least in the good years.

I have a really hard time believing that people that charter boats are really only doing it for the fish to bring home. Hell, you can go to a fish market and buy the fish for cheaper than chartering a boat!! Pretty weak argument if you ask me. People want to go out and catch fish, that's why they charter a boat. People keep two fish on those charters for one reason and one reason only, because they can. I would bet that most of it is given away to friends and family.

Hopefully it'll change some attitudes throughout the fishery. Last charter I went on the Capt' and mate were all about the fillets. We already had our 2 fish each limit about halfway through the charter and then I caught the best fish of the day, just under 35lbs. I had to talk them into releasing it. Mate says "me or the Capt' can keep that one". Once they saw I was determined to let it go they agreed, but you could tell it wasn't their usual practice. I'm sure they feel the more meat they supply the better the tip and word of mouth they'll get from their customers.

Not meant to be a condemnation of charter Capts'. I know there's plenty out there who promote C&R or keeping just a few.

I'll have mine on the rocks.

Eagles Dare in some cases when you get your two fish or what ever is the number at that time for each sport on the boat, Some Captains will keep the extra fish to sell at the market place . So if you are chartering the boat then good for you to speak up about releasing any that may put the number in the box, greater then what the number on the charter can keep. Some charter boats have used this ruse to increase there bottom line . Now I do not know for sure if you charter the boat and the number on the charter is 4, then under the present rules those four can keep 8 fish . Does the captain and mate get to keep 4 under the guidelines they operate the boat under, when conducting charters? Or do they need to be on the boat on non charter days to be allowed to keep the 4 fish, if the boat was not booked for recreational reasons?

In some cases when the charter is on a Sunday and they get to keep the four fish, they are sold on Monday the legal selling day, and in most cases the boat will not be out on a charter, but rather commercially fishing for bass and they will have a head start towards the legal daily limit for selling them The same is when the charter is on a Tuesday, They most likely will not be chartering on Wednesday, the legal selling day. If one sees a pattern like above, you should charter with some one else or get a reduced rate in my opinion.:D

I have been on a couple charters with about four guys and the Captain would pretty much keep the 1st 8 fish and when you reached it, trip over. I agree with most of you the fun is about catching and not keeping. But when you bring home 2 fillet for the wife and family that doesn't go too far and probably won't make the freezer. That's why I think there will be some people not dishing out the cash. I myself will still charter cause I have 3 girls and am screwed in a couple years when they become teenagers.

Why should 1 recreational fisherman be able to purchase a privilege over another recreational fisherman? NO WAY, I know the states are already looking at considering this option for the money fleet. If they want a full freezer of fillet then take them scup fishing.

When I was a mate down in Florida and they shut the grouper season down I went from 4 or 5 charters a week to 2 or 3 max..  If you didn't catch any meat fish on a trip(which never happened) you got the exact same type trip for free.  When I went out earlier this year for a bachelor party striper fishing I will tell you this, not everyone had been out on a charter before, and they fully expected 2 fish to go home with them.  The fishing was slow so only a few of us got keepers.  The guys who didn't get to keep were pretty disappointed.  People definitely expect meat from a trip.

Also, on a charter you are strongly urged to keep your first definite keeper and if the fishing is good you cull for your next big fish.  What happens when you go out spend $750 on a trip and all 6 of you catch a keeper on your first troll..  Days over...  can't fish anymore...  That's some expensive fish right there...

That's what I meant above by changing attitudes. Nothing says you can't keep fishing in your example above, just have to release any additional catches. Or let the first marginal keeper go if you're after a big fish.

One fish kept or two, a $750 charter is still expensive striper meat.

I have been guiding for over 20 years now and even back then, I was out every day, almost all my clients let there keeper stripers go... Most were fly fishermen, but not all. When we are looking for meat for the table, we go out for ground fish, I like the taste better anyways. That being said, one of the best fish I have eaten was a striper caught in Maine at our camp site that was throw in the pan over the fire in minutes! Every one comes to this great sport for something different, for me I am glad they are protecting the fish...

E.D., the law actually says you can't fish for striper once your limit has been met..  you can't keep a striper and fish for fun afterwards...  That is the whole reason why there was a 2 fish limit..  The real problem is and still will be the schmucks keeping anything and everything and claiming stupidity...  I saw it clear as day with other fellas whom are well respected members here.  At the "Ditch Fling"...  The dipchit kept at least 2 striper from the pier...  and neither of which were over 24"..

The real problem is southern draggers...  It's not commercial rod & reel striper fisherman,  it is the pricks who continue to pound on a spot till it's bereft of fish, then they move to another place and do the same..

I am saying in my simple mind...  That if a person can understand fish migration then we can fix it quite quickly..  I'm not a genius, but it seems fairly obvious to me.. The south is full of idiots, and we need to make up for their stupidity once again...

First off, it's all in the advertising, you need your hotspots to keep producing so you encourage catch and release..  The people you take out adhere to your words because they don't know any better, and frankly a couple of C-notes is peanuts when it comes to bragging to their friends..

The truth is, it's not the recreational fisherman, nor is it the commercial striper fisherman..  I't the draggers who are destroying the inshore grounds..  Why are they inshore?  Because they have already depleted the offshore grounds!!
