DelMarVa Fishin' Reports; March 2012

Rate this topic

Recommended Posts

After what will definitely be a February to remember, here's the third of our usual trio of winter season fishin' reports in the monthly mode; back to the bi-weekly routines - and hopefully some nice fish - come April, if not a few just a bit sooner than that.

As always, this is the place for your reports... as little or as much detail as you care to share, with hopefully a good bit less focus posted on exact spots and locations. Any and all word from the local waters welcome here, and "no fish" reports are welcome as well; always good to have gotten out there at least, wasn't it? ;)

I gave it a try here in the first part of March…

There was too much wind at times and the wind made it feel that much colder… A few days ago as that low came through, it starting snowing intensely where I fishing on the lower DelMarVa…nearly like a blizzard…lasted a while and then stopped…

Anyway, caught a keeper size Striped Bass :D…released!

hey guys-

I'm thinking tomorrow would be a fine day to pony up for permits & an annual pass, as well as to check out what we're working with this spring.

anyone have a lead for me on bait? I'm thinking of trying out that new fangled bait machine at AT...

The fish are someplace else, unless your somplace else; in which case they are somplace elser.

Depend on what part of the delmarva you will be on, i noticed on Old Inlet website they stated the have fresh bunker. I was also told Bills has fresh bait. south would be Bucks place. If you can find fresh, buy a load and freeze. dont know what will be available if the no netting rule goes DelMarVa wide. I am thinking Friday on the upper DelMarva. Check out the water temps.

In the back I finally caught a few Specks just like I did last year in March…but this time in a completely different place…no real size and all released.

Out front it was slim pickings…for several days the surf was void of fish of any kind, but in the past few days surf water temps hit 53 degrees…53 degree DelMarVa surf water temps usually happens mid-April…we are currently running a month ahead of schedule water temp-wise. Interestingly, I think there’s a new moon on the vernal equinox (March 20 this year) which is just days away. Water temps in the major Chesapeake Bay tributaries for Striped Bass spawning are already optimal…and once equilibrium is reached w/ daylight and nighttime (March 20) I think things (spawning) will happen quickly and there will be a rather quick exodus of Striped Bass from the Bay…

Anyway, I had a really good hookup…this fish was strong…I was really taken by surprise…its mid-March and I am already hooked into a good size Striped Bass…I was loving it until I started to realize this fish was really stubborn in sort of a sluggish way…hmm I thought...had an Idea of what was at the end of my line… When I got the fish into the near shore trough just behind the shoreline break, it stayed along the bottom…it took a good tug and pull to have the fish surface...when I saw the high dome back my suspicions were confirmed…a Black Drum…38”…released… Caught on squid strip(s)...

The boaters are also finding early Black Drum at Cape Charles…saw 2 boats return w/ decent size BDs…
