gadwall8
No spring season in West Central??? MikeMc
I don't get to see any snow geese where I live. Plenty of thos eCanada geese, though. Was in Assateague one year and saw thousands of the snow geese there. You know it must be a penguin bound down if you hear that terrible screaming and there ain't no other birds around. buckmaster
Yeah I watched about 1,000 land in the resevior behind my house, getting ready to poop in my drinking water. Snow geese numbesr are just ridiculous....the Feds need to do something beyound sport hunting or they are going to eat the arctic bare and starve the caribou and every other part of the food chain that depends on them. We get a fair amount on my lease in Warren County Nj...I just did a hunt with my local volunteer fire dept. in Maryland the other week... they featured it on the local outdoors show DelMarVa outdoors. Not as good hunting as previous years...but the first morning we did have a flock of like 10,000 come in. Haverodwilltravel
I saw what I would say was between 3 and 5 thousand land in Union pond in Manchester last Friday. It was an amazing sight. When I was a kid duck hunting, it was a rare sight to see a flock of 10 or more and to get a shot at one was rare indeed. I don't know enough to say whether this is a bad thing for us or the environment but I imagine that prior to North America being populated by Europeans and probably up until the last 200 years this was a common sight. Spaff
No spring season in West Central??? No canada season here in W. Central. There is or will be a season for snows but I understand they are hard to pull in without dozens, or hundreds, of dekes. Sometimes they locate in the middle of the lake below my place and it looks like a festering white boil from a distance.
MikeMc
'festering white boil' I think I dated her once. Not one of my prouder moments. jrhjr
In the Northern Neck of VA we have a wintering population of Tundra Swans. These things are huge...seven foot wing span. You can actually hunt them by lottery, one per season. One of my son's buddies killed one a few years ago, filled up the bed of a compact pickup... Saw them over the weekend when we went down by the water to get a bushel of oysters. There were a few dozen already on the ground and we watched maybe that many again trying to land. The wind was gusting to around forty knots and they were having a heck of a time...had to go around and around. When they finally got it right, they set down very gracefully. Seeing that made the weekend. powerless
lichum
Thousands of geese riding this south wind over Upstate NY today. Mostly canadas but a good number of snows mixed in. Did the enormous gaggle show up over upstate NY because of the unusually warm winter in NY? "Who is John Galt?" Who? You?
buckmaster
There are so many now due to modern agricultural practices for the most part...I forget the number...but the estimates are the population is a multiple of what it was before the area was settled hundreds of years ago. The problem with snows isn't really down here....unless you happen to own a sod farm...the problem is when they go back to the arctic with increased numbers and eat the tundra bare...there is such a slow growing season up there...some areas do not recover...or take years and years to recover...leaves no or less food for caribou and other animals...they alter their migrations or starve...and that starts to crash whole systems. They taste ok..last year I killed 53 in one day...and we made a big batch of kielbasa that we cook up at Giants tailgates. I think you could see one of the guys stop shooting to duck a falling bird...I yelled heads up because the guy to my right almost got hit with one. In our defense...the birds were very high...not the 30 yards the host said they were...in my opinion he called the shot way early...there were two flocks of a couple thousand birds each still coming in.
