I have caught fish on the Hudson on plugs. I know people who troll plugs as small as bomber salt A's. If they catch fish there is no reason a shore casting angler cant. I'm really just curious if anyone else is doing it and doing it with success.

Anyone plug the Hudson? There is NO reading on it. I've done well on the flats never on the main river.

Are the flats not the Hudson?

Lazyone completely agree with you. Water clarity is the biggest issue. If you look at google earth you can see the clean water pushing out of the tributaries. Clean, oxygenated water with the presence of herring = WIN

I'm going to be trying some surface plugs in the Hudson for the first time myself this Spring (Kingston area.)  It's true plugs are not commonly used around here, but I think that may have more to do with locals being accustomed to other methods of fishing. Clarity of water is a logical issue - but the tribs are typically much clearer and fact is guys do really well trolling with deep divers out in the main river where clarity would also seem to be an issue.

I've tried throwing a couple of big plugs when herring were around. I'm in Poughkeepsie. I tried a place south of me. I didn't have any success, but I was able to talk my way out of a trespassing ticket from MTA police. And this was at night! I am going to give it a better effort this year.
