Flying Asian carp threaten Great Lakes

Great Lakes area scientists continue to debate how to prevent Asian carp lurking in the Illinois River from entering Lake Michigan and devastating native fish species.

The Canadian-American International Joint Commission that regulates border waters wants authorities to install a barrier on the Illinois River to discourage the carp from entering Lake Michigan. A barrier that sends electric shocks to fish trying to swim from Lake Michigan into the Illinois River is already in place and the commission is hoping the second barrier - of either electricity, bubbles or sounds waves - would reinforce their efforts.

The carp also present a threat to fishermen and recreational water users. Asian Carp can jump up to 20 feet in the air, and the Fish and Wildlife Service says people have suffered neck injuries, broken noses and bruises from the flying fish. Some researchers now use cookie sheets or garbage can lids for protection.

"It's amusing until you get hit by one," said Rob Maher, commercial fishing program manager for the Illinois Department of Natural Resources. Maher believes even a second electric barrier will not work because the fish can so easily avoid it. "You come anywhere near these fish with electricity, and their response is to jump 20 feet in the air."

Time to break out the the guns & do some skeet shooting smile.gif

Found this blurb on a mid-west site...

"...But, what you do have to watch out for are the flying Asian Carp. They are big (2-3 foot) white carp that make 8-foot leaps out of the river. Last weekend Gary and Judy were suddenly surrounded by them. They would leap over their boat and hit them in the head. One hit Judy, then Gary, then continued back into the river. The worst part about them, other than possibly giving you a concussion, was that they were exceptionally slimy and usually had patches of green fungus growing on their skin. Anyway, on this particular day, there were so many of them jumping that thirty of them landed in their boat. They put them in a barrel and brought them back to the marina and had a big fish fry for everyone..."

Talk about "stupid fishing". biggrin.gif

It's weird that you put this up today.cwm24.gif My boss is here from Chicago and he fishes Lake Michigan all the time. He was just telling me this afternoon about these flying carp that have been known to knock people out while fishing in there boats.cwm31.gif He was telling me it's big news out there, a worse threat than the gobies. Supposevly these were raised by farmers in private ponds and were eventually realeased into the river. It does sound like fun Skeet shooting though!!!biggrin.gif
