Question about fish swallowing the hook.

On a lot of fishing shows I watch on tv, when a fish swallows a hook they always say just cut the line as close to the hook as possible and and it should rust out or whatever in short while and there's nothing to worry about. Now is this credible?

If so, then why do people always keep fish with the excuse that it swallowed the hook? Is it simply to justify keeping fish because they feel guilty? Or don't want others jumping all over their back? Or do they really believe the fish will die?

Don't get me wrong, I'm not accusing anyone of doing anything wrong, just curious.

it is alsways the best practice to cut the line as far down as you can fi you a C&R guy it gives the fish the best chance of survivel. it doesn't mean it will survive though. so if you are going to take a fish home it might as well be one you gut hooked.
