PENN 310

I would like to get a good setup for throwing clams. Recently I came across a "never been used" Penn 310 in my father's shed. I know this is basically a boat settup reel, but is it possible to cast with this, or is it a waste of my time? I was thinking about a 7000, but I have this reel, I figured I would try to put it to use. Any feedback would help. thanks

Luke,

I have never used this reel but I'll hazard a guess that it might be useable. My experience with Penn is the Model 160 Squidder which has no cast control and no levelwind. The Abu 7000 has both which makes it a popular choice with surfcasters. The size and line capacity of the 310 seem about right but the levelwind might severely limit the distance of your cast. I don't know if it has any cast control other than what you can get with your thumb. If not you've got a potential for backlash problems. I've never seen that reel used for surf casting but maybe someone here has some more insight into its potential.
