Fall/winter trout

Been out a couple times so far to my favorite holdover ponds. Seeing the size of the lakers coming from the res does not encourage me to go there.

Yet.

I know I will eventually.

Meanwhile we have had a couple goods days and go skunked a couple.

Typical fall shore fishing. One day it seems trout are everywhere. Next day, same spot. Nothing.

Yeah, the rez is producing mostly rat sized lakers at the moment that you can catch with a bare hook. That will get better as the spawn finishes up. December should be good up there, as long as it's not soo cold your guides and line freeze up. :)

Yesterday I got 2 hours in where I ran into you & your son. Nothing for me. There was a big low pressure system hanging off MA after the morning rain. The pressure bottoming out probably killed the bite for me.

A fly fisherman I talked to said there was a big midge hatch a couple of daya ago when it hit 70° and fish were everywhere.

 the Swift River

The canal west.

I grew up in western MA. I used to fly fish the Swift during high school and college summer breaks. There would be 1, 2 guys tops at the fork a little below the spillway. And no one further down the river.

We haven't done it for a few years now, but a group of maybe 6 of us would do a float trip from Rt.9 down to the Bondsville Dam.  Two people to a boat or canoe and we would catch all sorts of trout plus small mouth and large mouth bass.  There is not much forage for the fish in the fly fishing section of the river so they would wander down stream into the natural part of the river.  Good times but age has a way of creeping up on us.................

Same with me zak.

My parents would drop me off at the Swift below Rt 9, and I'd spend the entire day virtually alone. Running up and down the river, flogging the water with my fly rod. Hot days in July, you'd swear there wasn't a fish for 5 miles. Then the MDC (now the DCR) would release water, and you'd feel the icy water flowing along with a sudden drop in air temperature.

Fish that were non existent prior, were suddenly rising everywhere! And I still couldn't catch them.

A couple weeks ago at a different pond there was some kind of hatch in really shallow water, near weed beds and fallen trees. Something tiny.

Sunfish were rising all over and mixed in were a bunch of browns just lazily finning and slurping.

We came back the next day with fly rods and they were gone. Ghost town.

Cape ponds have been good most of the time. Where I hide out it's been mostly fishing alone too.Midge hatches on sunny days along wind breaks to calm areas.Fish in close to 3' off the shoreline.Casts longer than 35' have been unproductive.Mostly rainbows with a few big browns in very close at sunset.Smallies were mixed in in the cobble areas. But none in the last 2 weeks.4wt,floating line,10' 5x,12-14 black unweighted bugger.Hackle sized in 16-18 on the gauge. One other pond the bugger had to be down to a 20.

Have had a group of suckers finning on the surface off and on.Last couple of years it's been in November.Years past it was on warm calm days in December.Hmmmm?

Couple more trips over the long weekend.

Hit the same pond both days, but from opposite ends.

Friday on the calm side midges hatched all day and fish rose sporadically. A fly fisherman in a canoe or kayak probably would have cleaned  up.

We had our shiners chased, harassed and killed but only landed a few fish. Lots of hit n spits.

Saturday was more casual. We hit the warmer sunny side for a couple hours. Hard a few run offs but only one fish.

Hit a nearby pond and conditions were perfect. Sniping risers with the flyrod was only interrupted by watching eagles dropping out of the trees to occasionally strafe the water. Lots of bows and a lone brown.

Ma FW really does have an excellent trout program.
