Thanks for all the suggestions gents! Was at a vendors location today when i spotted some plastic web material they use to protect the threads on some of their brake cans. I asked for some and he said help yourself. So i snagged a few pieces and also stopped at Walmart for some paint, and a few mesh laundry bags. Will be painting some over the next week. Thanks for all the help!

If you want your paint job to hold up a little more on plastic or wood plugs a coat of Bin primer after a suff is a good way to go.

As Sandbar1 and RR  has shown you can get real nice results with a rattle can.

If it isn’t perfect the fish don’t care.

Seems to me that when they are beat up a bit they have more mojo.

Cut laundry bag or mesh for scaling. Cardboard held an inch or two from the plug to create a defined gradient, lateral line, etc. You can get fancy with cut stencils but I wouldn't bother. Spray, fish, use and abuse and hit it with another coat when the time comes.

One more question Sandbar, are you putting a coat of clear on your finish paint? I bought some just in case.

The paint HH recommended is primer and paint so should be good.

Primer and paint in one is a marketing scam.

If you paint anything a coat of primer ensures a better job.

Been painting for 38 years.

Sorry mine wasn't a rattle can. I was just showing another way to do scales, was rushing when I added to the thread...

I recommend going light with the clear...

Might be a dumb question, does layers of paint and clear add much weight to the plugs? All of the ones i’m painting are loaded at various weights.

Yes it can, some of those weights can be affected by bigger hooks and layers of paint and clear.

I've messed up a few..

Cannot tell on that one but on the Zon there's plastic glider blanks very cheap. They are fun to paint and they actually swim very well.

Not sure how strong the hangers are though as they are geared towards muskie..

Ok, so next question. I know alot of you guys have garages or dedicated areas where it’s safe to paint without fumes being an issue. I only have my basement, so it is an issue. I’ve seen some DIY paint booths made of cardboard or plastic equipped with small vent fans. Looking for ideas for making one? Whatcha guys doing?

Maybe should have started another thread? If so Tim, i can do so.
