JAL
What's the customary tip on a SeaBass trip with a local headboat?
Joe
I do 20; plus they'll charge for cleaning your catch. The fact that an opinion has been widely held is no evidence whatever that it is not utterly absurd

Shipwreck
It depends on the mate and how much you needed him. A boat I was shooting on in the spring I ended up helping a bunch of newbies and the mate tipped me a half case of beer lol. If it’s a head boat and you did your thing, didn’t tangle other anglers, didn’t need the mate except for the net, tied your own rigs and had your own tackle 20 is fine. If you were a hot mess adjust accordingly. "He's a good stick" - Mr. Miyagi" ~ "Yep!" - Captain Dingo "How are you doing that" - Jimmy the Mate ~ "Shipwreck is one of those guys!" - Capt. Slacker
If the fare is less than $100, a $20 tip... or more. If the fare is more than $100, go 20% or more. Some boats charge to cut fish, some don't. If the boat doesn't charge, dig deeper into the wallet when you make your tip. Matteo78
Slacker
The popular boat running in OCMD is now doing $165 fares for a day of open boat seabassing. All the mate does for me is drop and pull the anchor... and I'd still throw the guy $40 on a trip with that pricing. Joe and dena

Mates charge a buck each to clean sea bass, but counting change on a boat is a pain, 20 it is. Plus those mates are good guys, and are willing to share their knowledge. We caught a boat limit, I limited out around noon, it was a good day. The other head boats in town are cheaper, but you can set your watch by them leaving the dock, and getting back on time. This other captain will leave half hour early if all clients are aboard, and come home late if the fish do not cooperate. With assigned spots along the rail, there is no rail mugging too. A day on the water wears me out, the 100 little nicks and pokes from handling 50, 100 fish a day eats my hands up. A rough job is an understatement. Highlander1
So, whats a mate make on a 5 hour trip, boat has to pay $100 just for prepping, cleaning and keeping everything in order, if there are 15 anglers at $20 each tipping, thats another $300, so $400 a day in cash for an 8 hour stint overall. Not a bad take, but its not easy. problem is, folks wear you out, captains/boat staff can be difficult and the grind and monotony of doing it continuously will wear even the toughest fellers/gals out. Mooney earned, $20 is fair as a tip and another $10 if they clean the catch. A limit of each is 27 bucks, call it 30, or sharpen your flay knife. Material abundance without character is the path of destruction. -Thomas JeffersonThere are two ways to be fooled. Joe
Ocean Princess get $1.50 for everything. He got 50% of the pool; which is usual for me unless it's very large.
