Placed an order of 1oz Jetty Casters from a big online vendor. They arrived and I was shocked and disappointed to see they were tied with artificial hair.  Been tying my own bucktails for some time, so it’s been at least a few years since I bought any.  Has Andrus been doing this for a while?  What a shame! These were my go-to for store bought jigs for decades. Good hooks, well tied and lots of hair.  Now they are pretty much useless to me.  I guess I’ll get back on the vise or hit up Tinman.

The use of artificial material is recent to the past month or so.  I saw a couple on-line retailers have posted a notice about this change on their websites.  Another retailer did not have a notice on their website, but when i called them; they informed me the stock they had available was all synthetic material.

Very disappointing news because the Andrus bucktail is unmatched as far as a surf bucktail goes.  I am hoping they switch back to the natural material at some point in time.

It all started last year during a terrible thunderstorm, when I locked myself out of the house. Shelving myself with a large piece of sheet metal, I ran for cover under the tallest tree I could find!

Yeah-I saw one retailer posted about it (after the fact).....but it was not the one I bought from.  Would have been nice to have been given a heads-up.  Hoping they will allow me to return them without to much hassle.

Here is what one of the retailers posted:

PLEASE BE AWARE BEFORE ORDERING: Andrus is no longer tying these bucktails with natural bucktail hair. They have switched production over to synthetic hair (not pictured in the photos) due to shortages in material. If we have any of the old stock left in stock, we will send those. However, any others will be sent with the new synthetic hair."

Cant get their bare but painted jig heads anymore either. Used to spend all winter tying them. For personal use and just for something to do (give away). Two or three years now you can’t get them. Even saltwater edge couldn’t get them for me.

Blame mustad hooks that one. They discontinued some size of their 34185 jig hooks for a while.  Like the 8/0 size that everybody wanted.  Looks like the hooks are back now, but damages has been done.

Got caught with my pants down over the weekend and needed some heavier jigs. When into a shop and grabbed some without looking, and the guy at the counter pointed out the change and told says "Are you sure you want these?" I still bought, but what a downgrade, unfortunate to say the least. Got my order in with tinman (both bare and pre-tied jigs) his pre ties get pretty close to Andrus in volume. I also took a crack at tying my first ones. Posted a thread in the fly tying forum: "First crack at some bucktails" If you want, please give a look and give some feedback :)

Thanks for posting this. I was literally about to buy some myself. I'm brand new to Bucktails and these were gonna be my first. How does artificial hair compare to real hair? Does it look different when swimming the bucktail?

No bueno.  Bucktail hair is hollow which adds bouyancy and makes it perform/swim uniquely in the water.  Synthetic cannot match natural in this case.

Very thankful for this post, as I would be pissed if I bought a bunch of synthetic "bucktails".

Thanks, I heard a forum member named Dan Tinman makes similar bucktails. I'll be picking up a few from him eventually.

Too bad. My local tackle shop has not had them all year. I heard it was because they couldn't find enough bucktails. I guess they were correct. I'm glad I built up a good stock of them over the last few years. I'd buy five at a time. I must have at least 100 or so in various sizes. Dan Tinman makes a good one too as do a few others I've tried.

I’m curious to we’re all the deer tails are going ? Im pretty sure in my state deer harvest numbers are up and they were especially up during Covid. I know most of the tails come through the butcher chain. Most guys I know, especially the older guys are definitely taking their deer to one. Seems weird.
