Anyone try overloading a Redfin?

Hey everyone, I know it’s pretty standard for people to load Redfins with about 10cc/ml, but has anyone every tried heavier? Was thinking I wanted to give it a shot but not going to waste the time if someone has tried and it’s not worth it. Thanks in advance!

You'll dull the action and likely cause it to run deeper and off doing away with that distinctive surface V wake.

Honestly a redfin at 10CC Is near perfect. I wouldn't go over 12 myself. If you want a longer casting, deeper running plug with a similar profile a Bomber or SP or even a larger profile needle like the Wadd are probably better choices.

You can play around with hardware, hooks and rings to tune your plug to your desired action.

Super helpful. I love how the 10cc ones I did work so I’ll stick with that. Thanks for saving me a test run

Never a bad idea to experiment but at least for me the fin fills a very specific niche in my rotation. A subtle surface/barely subsurface presentation with that aforementioned V wake. It's a deadly plug fished in this manner in the right conditions.

And I agree the 10CC swim beautifully. I load and go through more than a few each season.

I've started experimenting with HG loads as well. Action is near perfect.

So sick man! You’re always rockin some nice plugs. Hg is above my level haha. Hey question, if you don’t mind - What you use to paint those scales? Not the paint, like the stencil or whatever?

All RedFins swim deeper when 100% filled. There action is also slowed. The best application is in a fast cross current.  The most successful 100% for me has been the 4 1/2in  CO 8 size with two size 3  4x hooks.

Anyone know how the redingfin ones that are thru wired and foam filled compare to the ones that are loaded to 10cc?

My buddy gave me a big jar a HG years ago but I was to nervous to play with it.  I ended up giving it back to him when my son was pounding on something at the workbench vice and I saw it tipping over in my mind :scared:.

I feel this lure can be over loaded very easily and the action is not optimal overloaded...

1 1/4 oz. to 1 1/2 oz. is just about a perfect weight for a loaded 7" Redfin as others have noted in this thread.  On these plugs I like a 4/0 4X VMC treble on the belly w/split ring and a 3/0 4X VMC treble with split ring on the rear. Anymore load and the Redfin starts to lose its enticing action. Also, a I oz. light load is great for a surface swimming Redfin. I downsize the trebles on these plugs to VMC 1/0 belly and rear with split rings. I have found that mercury is the best way to load these plugs, but it is very dangerous and hard to find. Water works great too and is readily available and safe. Just be sure to seal your Redfin with Zap-A-Gap glue inside and out before loading. That way they will not leak no matter what loading material you decide to use.

The loaded 7" Redfin is one of my all-time favorite plugs to catch stripers. At least one or two have been in my surf bag since the late '70s. How many plugs can you say that about?

Quick story: back in the late '70s a surf fisherman I knew well used to load the 7" and  5" Redfins entirely with lead. The plugs would cast like a sinker, and I personally saw him catch bass on both sizes of these loaded up plugs. He was into distance and mostly used these heavily weighted Redfins in windy and/or rough water situations. He gave me a few but I never caught on them. Both sizes came through the water like a stick. No action at all.

Exactly why I've paid a higher price for already loaded HG plugs, I don't want to try my hand at it until I take the time to really understand the process and take the necessary precautions.

Nothing fancy with those paints, a cut up mesh laundry bag. Pull it tight over the plug for a more distinctive scale pattern or leave it loose for an erratic look.

After years of experimenting settled on copper shot to load, no hassles with sealing the plug if using water or oil.

7 inch 1.5oz finished is the best formula I've found, 1.25oz ok, 1.75oz or more kills the action. Weight including hooks and hardware...3/0 treble and split ring on the belly, 4/0 dressed Siwash or just a flag on the tail. Keep the tail light and it kicks better, retains more of it's action. Day or night always at least one in the bag.
