Not a pencil, but when blues are on the feed, they ain't choosy----Super Strike 2-3/8 oz, no belly hook, single Siwash on the rear. My go-to bluefish plug on the Vineyard for many years. The material is durable enough to stand up to even big blues. Not sure what's still available in the way of "rabbit" plugs like Roberts.

Gators can chomp hollow plastic in half, so I'd look for something thru-wired.

+1 on both the CCs and Tusnami TPs. Can’t beat the rattle and classic pencil action of the CC, but the TP casts very well and has a cupped face which allows it to be retrieved with either a pencil or “regular” popper action. Both lures have produced very well for me for both blues and stripers when the fish are on a topwater bite. I’ve even caught big bass on the CC at night, when nothing else would get them to hit.

Never tried adding a split ring.  I always use a clip..

He means the tiny hook hanger on the belly hook. I have the same problem. But maybe he gave us the answer. Use a TA clip instead of a split ring.
