I don't think it changes the action at all..I have rigged all my wooden lip plugs this way and they produce  very well .  Yes when you crimp the barbs the damage goes way down including to your hands. Almost every bass I catch on plugs go for the front of the plug.

I know a lot of guys prefer this method but I don’t really understand why given today’s split rings are very strong. I know it eliminates a point of failure but I’ve only ever had an issue with split rings failing after landing a large number of fish on it.

It's because the maker designs, tests and recommends using cut hooks on his plugs.

just what Bob recommends. I even asked him the other night just out of curiosity and it was a hard no on the split rings, not even on the tail hooks. 

Where do you go when the lights go out?
