Longfin mako washed up on the beach in Pensacola. Beach goers sent it on its way. They found a dead longfin in the area more recently, might not have made it. Caught one when I was longlining. Had never heard of them before. Capt kept the rack, not good eating

1 shot placed smartly between the eyes, they all get some good steaks. Damn good eating.

Trash. They're not good eating. No market for them in the US If my captain got rid of the only one we caught other than the fins and rack, the meat ain't worth a damn

You're right, I thought I read Shortfin, but I'm trying to do 12 damn things and wasn't paying attention.

Wait, since when is mako shark not good eating? :headscratch:

It’s a longfin mako, not a short fin. Looks pretty much the same, great dentures, but pectoral fins more on the order of a blue shark. They’re not good eating

The video doesn't show it, but apparently they were successful and got the shark back in the water - and it swam away...so kudos to them for saving such a magnificent critter that just needed a little boost off the beach :th:

Show someone how to catch striped bass and they'll be ready to fish anywhere.
Show someone where to go striped bass fishing and you'll have a desperate report chaser with loose lips.

It was a Facebook video, tried finding it on you tube, first one wouldn't post, something about emojis, Fish did swim away, but a video turned up of a dead long fin in the gulf at pensacola beach, probably the same one. When I was long lining we had a number of makos, but only one long fin.

They got the thing swimming…they did what they could…I’m giving them credit :th:

If that happened in NY they wouldn’t even let people on the sand

In NY they'd chop the fins off and run to the nearest Chinese food place to get paid :)
