I just dont like switching the starting batteries when running. Even though those are make before break switches ( meaning a connection is made on 1 is made before the other is off), i dont trust them or myself not to go too far, wrong way or switch breaks. Running engines with no battery attached can do mucho damage. Even for a split second. What would it do? Have to ask... When I had a battery go in my Tahoe, in the middle of a cold snap, the tech jumped it in the parking lot, brought into the bay, and proceeded to swap the battery with the vehicle running the whole time. No issues two years later. Just curious, and I am not an electrical genius here.... And for the record, two batteries on one switch. I am on both most of the time and switch to one if anchored or drifting for a period to save one from a possible short draining down both Edited September 19 by nightfighter

I am on both most of the time and switch to one if anchored or drifting for a period to save one from a possible short draining down both A battery acts as a voltage buffer. On pre fuel injection vehicles there wasnt much that the alternator powered. The electrical systems were basic and mechanically controlled. A battery could be swapped out with the car running. Once computers were added onto cars and boat engines, things got way more complicated. All the sensors run off a 5 volt refrence voltage. I.e. a throttle position sensor reads about .7 volts at idle and 4.5 volts at wot. Thats the level of sensitivity we're talking about. Now remove the battery or switch the switch off while the engine is running. In that split second, the alternator may not know what to do with the extra voltage. For that split second, the normally 12v system jumps to, lets say 100 volts. That voltage has to go somewhere. It frys the refrence voltage in the computer, not only wrecking the computer but a bunch of stuff attached to it. Sometimes people get lucky. Other times not so much. Thats why i dont like using the battery switch with the engine running. In kmls case, he still has the engine batteries on so the voltage has somewhere to go even if he switches the house batteries on or off. the human race has proved darwins theory of evolution wrong. we let the dumb survive. 31BBert
The house battery should charge even set to 1. I leave my house on 1 and it charges when the engines are running. My start switches are just on and off, while the house is 1/2/all. If I switch it to all I can bring all batteries online to start an engine if needed. 31Bert
Bergallmaster
@nightfighter just curious, did you ever have to replace the alternator in the tahoe. the human race has proved darwins theory of evolution wrong. we let the dumb survive.
