Just saw a news story that a white shark has already been seen in the area.

Also a different story that they plan to leave the whale and let nature take its course in the impending storm surge.

Yum. Nothing like a little essence of pulverized whale to infuse the local waters.

Surfing at Scarborough getting a bit more exiting?

Crazy stuff showing up this season.  Last night’s casting session I was snagging all sorts of tropical looking weed with my plugs.  Must be some sort of offshoot current from the Gulf Stream coming closer to shore.  Might explain the prevalence of Mahi in tight recently.

They'll let it sit and stink until it gets upwind of Watchhill.

That carcass will break up into chunks with swells that are due this week.  Be interesting to see where it ends up.  Probably a few dogs will no doubt roll around on some of the chunks ;)

I wonder if you could take the tail off, dry it out and hang it on the side of your shed?

Absolutely, just have to change the word “shed” to “offshore wind turbine”.   There should be enough dead whales to put a tail on every turbine!   What a trophy!

I remember an incident years back where a fisherman cut a chunk out of a dead whale off Pt Judith and used it to catch a great white that had been feeding on the whale.   Even though the whale was dead it was still protected and it was illegal to cut into it and he wound up paying a hefty fine (10k if I remember correctly) after a few years of litigation.

USAF Security Service - I never existed was never there

I was looking for information on whale strandings in RI and found this article from 2019, apparently written in 2017.

It's the earliest reference to turbines vs whales I could find and firmly associated it with noted marine mammal expert from Fox, Tucker Carlson.

There's excellent information regarding the early turbine work as it pertains to whales. It seems to answer questions everyone is asking now.

It's long and you can skip most of the natural history of whales stuff, except for the part about the whales and their food are on an upswing in population. More live whales = more dead whales.

The last part lists the humpback whales stranded in the past couple decades.
