This. I rarely fish live bait but just the other day I had to bust out the cast net to fish live spearing under a balsa float. Still pretty frustrating though as you mostly net larger spearing and the snappers will tend to bite them in half but you can get follow up bites on the half eaten spearing.

haha tried that as well..  still nothing

its bizarre

People often say blues are super easy to catch and will hit or bite anything. I don't find that to be true. When fishing in clear water I can often see them follow lures or investigate bait and not hit it. When blue fishing is easy its typically because there is just a ton of fish in the water and whether that means just law of numbers or the presence of the other fish turns on a competitive switch in their brain to kill and destroy.

One thing in the back of my mind when I hopped on here this morning.  Was whether anyone else noticed the extreme absence of Snapper Blues.  Areas that would typically be overrun with them. Nothing.  I'm seeing surface action but it's peanut bunker slapping or getting spooked.  I've seen schools of rays causing bait to just rain out of the water.  The crabbing has been off the charts down in South Jersey. So that's my point of view is multiple locations South Jersey that should be riddled with snappers.  Add Shark River to that list as well.  I'm not really targeting Snapper Blues but I always bring a light Rod when I'm crabbing my conclusion is the surface action is not snappers it's peanut bunker.  The lack of Snapper Blues is very concerning though

One thing to keep in mind is that snappers are not married to shallow water, they just follow the bait. I don't think a lot of people boat fish for snappers but I have fished current seams a mile out on my kayak and done well catching snappers even when fishing from shore was poor. When conditions are right snappers can really push far far back into tidal creeks and everything but I don't think its a necessary part of their life history.

1/8-1/4 oz Hopkins metal. Give it a twitch every 3rd crank. 5’ UL rod 4-6lb test and a 10-12 lb leader.

I like a Kastmaster 1/4 oz. chrome or gold... Single hook... 12" , 12# leader.

Yup they work too. Single hook is always preferred. I have a strange attachment to Hopkins. Very hard to shake!!
