Does anyone have any experience with them? AFAIK, there's only one production rod (Hardy Marksman Z) & one blank (Northfork Composites PSI). Both are 106". Rumor is that Sage is working on one as well but who knows when/if that will be available.

I've had several discussions with my Florida guide and he swears by them. Also, I know some other guys down there that can fish anything that they want but fish the 1pc Hardy's. I have a PSI blank on order, I have no idea when I'll actually get it tho. Hopefully in the next few weeks. If so I can get it built for albie season, if not it will be a winter project and it may tag along to Key West in February. I may pick up a Hardy thru my guide but that won't be until February as well.

I love my one piece rods and would duplicate all of my multi piece rods (fresh and salt) with one piece rods if available.

I have a Loomis CrossCurrent 8wt and an NRX 8wt and fish them heavily around my home waters. I also have a couple of the BPS Heat one piece rods that are great too.

Not 8’10” but if you’re an 8 weight guy, Orvis’ 8’5” Helios Blackout is a badass rod.

In regards to this thread, I’m not interested in 4 piece rods.

I’ve only fished a one piece rod once, an 8wt loomis nrx rod and it was AMAZING. What an awesome rod…made my loomis Asquith feel like garbage.  Would love to try some other one piece rods and see if I like them as much.

I’ve never cast one but always wanted one. I’ve never seen anyone fishing a one piece rod around my local waters. It would fit perfectly in my fishing rig.

I’ll need to look up that Hardy model.

Looking forward to hearing how you like the blank your bought once you get it wrapped up.

Edit….looked up the Hardy. Wish they made it in lighter weights, like 6 wt.

I'm curious, what are the advantages of a 1-piece fly rod... smoother bend in tip, no danger of casting the tip off?

It is hard to quantify. Never cast one piece fly rods but have 11 feet one piece lamiglas 3 oz surf rods and it is just so nice. That's a comparison with a Zziplex 11  footer short butt long tip a fantastic rod but the lami wins out.  Maybe the true test has to be a blind fold one. Very secure with no joints. Given the choice all my rods would be one piece except when airline travel is required. The logistics of shipping is probably not great. Mail order could be a challenge for retailers. Mike

If transportation is not an issue why not a 1pc without ferrules to constantly check. I have a Loomis cross current 1pc 10wt, it's my go to open beach rod for years. And the no ferrules was basically why I bought it over its 4pc counterpart. As a bonus it casts and fights fish very well too, can't say it feels any better than a 4pc though. They have a cult following with the Florida guides so that has to say something about durability. I would buy 1pc in multiple line weights if availability wasn't an issue, but clearly a 4pc travel rod is where the industry turns for sales.

All my best surf rods are 1pc, now dinosaurs and near impossible to find blanks anymore...picked up a few 2pc offerings from Century, outstanding blank designs but when the weather and water get nasty I'm more comfortable fishing the 1pc Lami's.

To add to @Mike Oliver and @surfrat59  's replies.

A multi-piece rod is never ideal for anything but travel and shipping.

We pay a premium for these rods and their engineering.  Most flyrods would be categorize in the hightest pricepoint of all disciplines.

Guide alignment matters, as does equipment longevity.

Multi pieces just open up the potential for human error in alignment and also seating. Both will affect how a rod performs on cast and when fighting fish.  Incorrect assembly could result in rod damage or failure.  Everytime we assemble and take apart a rod we may be wearing on the fit of the joints.  I have been considering just taping up my home water rods to act like one piece rods.

In general there is an incredibly amount of force and friction on the guides on cast.  It amazes me the rod will stay assembled when I watch a tangle power its way through the guides. I have some snake guides that are so small I really dont understand it....especially when we consider the diameter of a fly line.  Over an outing I am sure the seating of the joins are different than when I started.

Theoreitcally a one piece rod is just more sound. Fewer points of error/failure.  For someone targeting large fish this factors in more.  Spend $$$$ to get that one shot, you want to eliminate as many potential failures as possible.  I suspect @Fergal 's motivation may be related to this.

I too am a lamiglas gsb one piece rod nut.  It is as much about the blanks( especially the 1321m) than it is about it being one piece, but all the above notes apply.   The 1321m is a battle weapon of choice.

All that said, most flyrods are incredibly strong and forgiving for the abuse we put on them.  Most flyfisherman are not big fish hunters.

Heh Surf rat what a fabulous reply. I have not been able to cast my 1321M lami for about 8 years after I stopped going  to M. I have an American friend who stores two of them for.me. I built them on the decks of the rental houses. There is the 10 foot blank. I should find a way to get that to you so you can build it and fish it. I will try and arrange that for you. My friend lives near Fire Island  Inlet. Great guy you will.instantly like him when you meet him..The GSB is such an iconic blank. I love it to bits. Mike

I’ve never had an issue with any multi-piece rod, I’ve never had one come apart while using them. I’ve had one turn a bit after fishing a lot but that’s it.

There’s two aspects to trying a Hardy: 1) is one piece better? 2) do I like the rod and how it feels to me?

For use up here, one piece isn’t an issue. I take my truck to the keys so it wouldn’t be an issue there too.

I’m not unhappy with my current rods, I’m just wondering if throwing a 1pc would be noticeably better?

Perhaps a dumb question but are multi-piece rod blanks manufactured as a single blank and then cut and ferrules attached or are individual rod pieces manufactured separately?
