The alarm went off at 415, I looked at the radar and thought about staying in bed. I decided to go out anyways. Well, I should have stayed in bed. The wind was more than forecast and the water is still brown. If I do fish tomorrow I won’t be up for sunrise.

I think it needs another day or so.

Went out late afternoon Sunday for an hour and only saw a couple break the surface. lost one to leader breaking from tangled fly line.Need to start using the go pro to review the chaos at crunch time. When this front passes it should be lights out with bass, blues and Albies if the bait didn't all get blown away.

You don’t need a Go-Pro. You identified the problem. Make sure your line is well stretched and keep your composure as it’s leaving the deck after the take.

Tangles are sometimes just bad luck, but other times it’s more than that. I purchased a new Rio Outbound Short a couple weeks ago to replace a Rio XP that was severely cracked. My reason for the change was the hope that this line wouldn’t crack after just a season, as several Rio lines have done. Anyway, I had more running line tangles over the course of the day than I’ve had over my entire fly fishing career. Tangles on the cast, tangles on the takes, ridiculous. Needless to say, it went back. I ended up purchasing an SA tropical intermediate for the increased stiffness. Awesome line so far.

I had the same experience with the Outbound Short. Switched to Airflow Cold Water Intermediate. Takes me a few more false casts to get it out there but no tangles.

Yea it was awful. I was into the fish pretty good and had landed a bunch, but after so many tangles I just had to put the fly rod down, it was that bad.

Crouching down and holding my line hand only a few inches above the deck as line is cleared helps greatly in avoiding snarls.
Another trick is to leave enough slack from the reel to the deck to avoid lifting bottom loops in the line pile when you false cast or turn…..easier said than done, however.
Bare feet or socks helps with standing on the line.
Rod butt against the arm while clearing line is helpful.

I’m heading out tomorrow for sunrise. I can stay until about noon, maybe a little later. It looks like the wind is going to hold off in the am.

My window is Tuesday and then my two week vacation starts Friday of next week.

I ended up rescheduling a trip to RI from NYC to 9/29-30 due to Lee. Let me know if you want to link up and chase some albies!

Forecast here LI East winds 10/20 tomorrow am increasing in the afternoon to the weekends forecasted level.. Was out this am with a light N wind at my back, was surprised to see some decent whitewater, the swells must be pushing up ahead of the storm already. Spinning gear for me tomorrow, bucktails, big plugs and metal lips in the white water.

It may end up sucking tomorrow but the window is short for them and I have a clear schedule for the am. Worst case scenario is I lose some sleep and waste some gas. The option is going into work….
