Do albies like tons of flash? I’ve caught some on flies with no flash, plenty on flies with just a bit of flash, and I’ve never tried very flashy stuff.

I don’t think there’s a definitive answer to that. They’re moody bitches sometimes. Other times they’re bluefish stupid.

Funny they're considered garbage fish or bait in FL....bonita lol.  I tried explaining what bonito vs albies were to a crew down there one time.....took em a while to grasp the concept.

Only a couple times have I found thrm to be aggressive, most of the time they will take one or two particular things and the Rest of the time they seem borderline impossible.

They’re almost always cooperative in foul conditions. Get the fly in front of them and you’re getting eaten. Bright conditions and flat water? Not so much.

In general I hate fly fishing in the northeast but you guys have piqued my interest.....may give it a go this year.

I've seen both. Generally they're in between that tho. Throw something reasonable at them and they'll probably eat. But I've seen time where it took a size 4 or 6 sparsely tied fly to get them.

My go-to is something in white, preferably 2-3" long. I'll adjust based on what I see them doing from there.

These damn things are my absolute favorite fish. If you're lucky you get them for 6 weeks starting ~labor day. One hurricane can kill a season, they may never show, they may not be in your area... In the NE we do not have a lot of sight fishing available, albies are the exception.

Those FUCHERS better show this year....

  • 3 weeks later...

Getting closer to show time but this is exactly the thing that I do not want to see - a bunch of storms right at the beginning of albie season. Hopefully it's these two and nothing else for a while. They're definitely going to give a big swell for a few days.

It's very early obviously but over the years, the worst thing a season was a string of storms just as it gets started. They don't need to be a hit here, just offshore throwing in big swells is enough. Hopefully these two make that sharp right and get out of here quickly with nothing else behind them for two weeks.

Even 400 miles out turns the fish off ,weather is part of the game got to on the water a lot , I’m a huge fan of biometric pressure. Salt and fresh waters  .

Additional rain also decreases salinity levels in the water and that generally doesn’t work well for scombrids, from what I understand.

With that said, I’ve been seeing Spanish myself and have confirmed catches of various other scombrids so far.
