TBYRD
The story says No private boats allowed to be launched into it….. Ditch Troll #338 -Tight Lines
bob_G
So let me guess. No private boats will be allowed beginning immediately. So if you own a boat specifically to fish Quabbin, like many do, you're out of luck. But let me guess, there's good news. The DCR will be happy to rent you one of their boats at Gate 43. I smell a rate increase. The Sultan of Sluggo
wrboz
I think just the pond is closed to private boats. Res is good to go for now.
Stripernut1
It is just the pond. If you have a "Tagged" boat they don't want you going from the pond to the main res... I don't know how long that will slow the spread to the res. If I was in charge and the plant is in a particular area I would do my best to wipe it out. If it is already throughout the pond I would start thinking about the best ways to live with it... I don't see how this can be used to shut down the Q to private boats, yes the pond, but not the main res. That said, "reason" is not always used to make decisions, sadly. I love fishing that pond with a scum fog, most often with a rental and a clamp on-trolling motor, but I know a number of bass fishermen will be disappointed. If they keep it closed to private boats and there are enough anglers interested in just fishing the pond, then it would take almost no extra effort/cost to tag a boat for the pond only... I have seen on some of the other board's, anglers acting as if the sky was falling, I will wait to see what will be done...

I can completely understand that reaction. We're dealing with the DCR here. They are not at all sympathetic to the needs of sportsmen. Two guys WOT30MPH. My ride to Quabbin was 3 1/2 hours, a trip I made every other weekend. I loved going there. When they went to tagged boats, zebra musses was the excuse I couldn't use my boat on other lakes so I sold it. I miss coming up there, I miss that boat. Nowadays, I don't think there is any way to stop invasives. Just read the news. It seems there is something new colonizing our water, our woods, gardens, farms etc. I'm not saying we shouldn't try, but with global commerce, and global travel, I think we're shoveling sand against the tide. I suspect you maybe right. All we can do is delay the inevitable and hope to mitigate the effects. Buying some time may give us an opportunity to come up with a long term solution. bob_G
A lot of invasives come in on the feathers of birds such as ducks. About 20 years ago while we were on our annual herring run cleanup at Bournedale I discovered the run was loaded with Asian clams, aka golden clams, or lucky clams. Millions of them. I walked up to Great Herring Pond only to find it was loaded as well. I called Ma FW invasive species specialist, and he came right down. He wasn't happy. He told me people use Asian clams in coi ponds, and often dump the coi and clams in some local pond when they grow tired of them. But he told me the clams will undoubtedly spread, as the clam eggs stick to the feathers of ducks, and they'll spread them in their travels. He was right because all the upper Cape ponds now have Asian clams. The Sultan of Sluggo
TBYRD
^^^^ I heard that is how chain pickerel are in almost every body of water. Sticky eggs hitch hike on duck feet. Ditch Troll #338 -Tight Lines
