After 5 weeks of health issues I ventured out with flyrod in hand as the wind was from behind me. In the river and harbor no fish seen or hooked by boaters, clunkers etc. 8 of us. Awesome water flow, clean, crabs, no visible bait or birds. On my way out , the fish were busting way back inside in 2’ of water about 200’ away. A little light rain and decent water temps.A few pics including the topwater pic.

Lots of birds working an inlet last night til dark, fish busting on the surface going as far as to come all the way out of the water but weren’t willing to touch anything I threw. As far as I could tell they were dialed on really small bait and everything in my bag was too big. Fly guys picked up some large shad but no bass. Am I wrong in thinking the fish busting were bass? Do shad feed that aggressively? Any input?

The shad breaking the water surface is quite small, the bass I see in shallows are swirls, and sometimes a frenzy, even in shallow water. The water where the fish were drains completely to a mud flat. Will do different approach tomorrow

Last Wednesday they were on sand eels.  I know because I hooked one.  I believe hickory shad will feed on sand eels but I don't think Americans do.  Diamond jig caught the majority for me that day (3 out of 4).

Similar last night a little south of there. I could see a lot of diving birds over in NH, there was bait on the surface where I was but nothing on it that I could see. Nice night out though;

A woman was taking photos and when I came to the parking lot she was waiting to get my number so she could send it to me. Very nice of her!

That’s cool, when I was pier fishing snook I had lots of photos forwarded to me that I did not know I did landing a fish. I always bring a camera or phone.
