First puppy obedience class

Took our four month old Brit, Chaser to his first puppy obedience class tonight.   A failure of epic proportions.  If there's a stronger term, it would apply.

My wife's been doing this for years with all our dogs, and he completely embarrassed her tonight.  Almost like he didn't even know his name, let alone basic commands.

We (and he) have a long week ahead of us.  Here's the little creep.

It sounds to me like your dog needs socialized. It needs to get to the point seeing other dogs and people is no big deal, and nothing to get excited about.

Take Chaser with you every time you leave the house, and to a dog park, just to watch and see other dogs, while obeying commands.

Make him pay attention to you while being distracted by keep treating every time he looks at you.

Dog training is all about your dog performing while being confronted by the Dreaded 3 Ds...Distance, Distraction, and Duration.

Distance...how far away from you will your dog obey a command.

Distraction...will your dog obey while distracted by other dogs, or people.

Duration...how long will your dog hold a sit, or stay, or other command.

Practice is what it takes.

All great advice dena, and I get it.

I thought we were doing all that, but obviously not enough.  We were holding off on dog parks and socializing until he was fully vaccinated.

We've had some real knuckleheads go through obedience 1-3 with flying colors.  But tonight's performance was one for the books. The only thing he didn't do was take a dump on the floor.  I guess he's saving it for next week.

Only dog parks with him on leash and sitting nicely next to you.  You want him to be calm around dogs and listen to you.

Lol.

Bob, sorry for your wife. That said, my wife had the exact same experience a little over 2 years ago with our current dog. He turned out to be the best dog I've ever had. He's 2 and a half and doesn't leave the lawn. He's amazing with kids and all people as well as every other dog. He listens well and is off leash more than on. He's a terrible watch dog but that's not what we were after. Best of luck with the pup. Puppy class is not the final call.
