Plover Closures???

I’m assuming that nesting/hatching started a couple weeks earlier this year due to the warm spring weather? Does this mean the beaches will open up sooner? Isn’t it around 30 days for the birds to fledge. That would mean an early July opening. Doubtful.

I noticed there was a sign a little before the race point lighthouse that  said parking for fishing only. Are we allowed to drive out to there and park and walk the rest of the way.

Well...we were all told/heard that was the case here UNTIL yesterday.  Notice went out stating something to the effect "due to the recent storm/wind and high tides numerous nests were washed out.  The nesting pairs will begin a re-nesting process".  GTFOH!!!!!

I wouldn't care so much as the drive on beach is closed at night anyway, but this year the whole beach road is in lockdown unlike anything I've seen before.  Apparently the parking lot is off limits after closing now too!!!

From a letter last week:

As mandated when restrictions occur, the maximum oversand vehicle limits may be reduced (below the 250 Resident
and 250 Non-Resident vehicle limits when no restrictions are in place) on the front beach to maintain compliance
with the Duxbury Beach Management and Conservation Plan, and to maintain public safety and order.
As of June 1, 2023, access to the oversand vehicle portions of Duxbury beach are as follows:
Crossovers 1 and 2 are currently closed;
Crossover 3 is reduced to 122 vehicles;
On Friday (6/2) and Saturday (6/3), Crossover 3 will be further reduced to 36 vehicles;
On Sunday, June 4th, all crossovers, the back road and cut outs will be closed until further notice.

As an additional means of helping prevent any further acts of vandalism, Police Department personnel will be present at closing time and making routine patrols throughout each night during the season to confirm that those areas remain vacated.

What’s the vandalism aspect of this? Is that just another excuse to close the beach?

The incidents can hardly be classified as “vandalism” in my opinion.  More like kids doing kid stuff.  Nothing new this year versus last year versus the past 50 years.  To your point, the folks that own/manage the beach certainly grabbed it and are using it to fuel the closure narrative.

Because the “vandalism” was so benign there are more than a few theories that it was actually a setup perpetrated by the pro-closure side.

From what I saw in the news, it wasn't the magnitude of the vandalism, it was the fact that the bird exclusion fences were cut. The vandalism was targeting the birds.

To me, the implication was that the police presence was specifically to protect against anti-bird related retaliation.

One small section of wooden fence was knocked over near a foot path.  Looked like someone just wanted access.  The other "fence" damage was single rope attached to re-bar stakes.  Yes, vandalism if you will.  Malicious intent towards the birds???  Hard to say.  Certainly easy to repair with no real harm done....thus the conspiracy theories haha.

I stopped and talked to a DPD Officer out there a few weeks ago.  He was pretty far down the beach road and not paying much attention to the main lot.  A "gentle reminder that stickers are required 24/7/365 out here" was terminology thrown around.  He also said he was "just keeping an eye on things".  So, I believe their presence is twofold (permits and vandalism deterent).  It was pretty late too and I was surprised to see him there.

I haven’t seen the Duxbury main lot closure after dark be enforced yet, still seems to be tons of high schoolers there every night. It’s a bummer though that they closed off the dirt road and cutoffs, again though idk how hard they’re really going to enforce that in the middle of the night. Especially if the cops can see you’re just fishing. :shrug:
