An all in one shotgun?

Recommended Posts

After shooting some clays this past weekend, I want my shotgun yesterday!

Prior to, I was eyeing up the Mossberg 940 JM Pro. While this could be an option for an all around, a 9+1 is illegal in Jersey anyway. The 940 field pro seems like the better option. It's a 4+1 with a 28" barrel.

It's the same semi auto gas system as the 940 JM Pro. I have read nothing but great things about this budget option gun.

Thoughts? Suggestions?

Depends on the main usage of the shotgun.  For me, it's HD/SD and that's why I have a Beretta A300 Ultra Patrol LE.  You could plug the magazine down to make it commie jersey legal.

I was leaning that way initially but shooting clays is fun. I was actually using my buddy's a300 this weekend but it was not the one you have. Barrel was 28" I think. Nice gun.

The difference 'tween a clay game shotgun and an HD/SD shotgun is primarily handling/size/weight.  My Beretta is a fixed cylinder Law Enforcement version, no chokes, but if I'd gotten it with adjustable chokes it'd be fine for plinking trap or skeet.

Yeah but the longer barrel should help. Plus the place I went Sunday requires minimum barrel length of 24"

For clay/skeet, you need a fancy over/under.  And a fancy vest.

Hey, I resemble that remark!!!

To Scallywag, a semi-auto is ok but for clay shooting, start inexpensively.  There are turkish O/Us which are around $500.00 new, 12 or 20 gauge.  They are heavy but they are solid.  Or a good American pump, like the 870 which is the gun I started with.  If you really get into it, you can spend more later, even for a fancy vest, with club logos on it.:)

Thanks, Knight.

The reason I'm leaning towards the semi-auto is because I want a do it all gun. Primary objective is more home defense. The clays wouldn't be more than a couple times a year thing, maybe.

At this point in my life, I don't see owning a ton of guns. Having something that can serve multiple purposes is probably better for me right now.

That is good reasoning.  You don't want a street sweeper like Beach Bob's but a good pump with a 28" barrel and the rib is a good choice.  With no kids around it is under the bed and ready to crank one into the chamber.  You can also hunt, target, clay, etc.  Good all around gun.  Put a cylinder/skeet choke into it and you're ready to go.  New shotguns almost always come with a set of chokes for various uses.  Cylinder/skeet gives you the widest pattern at the shortest range.  But try clay shooting more often as it is fun, though it can get expensive today with the price of ammo.  Good luck.
