What is this buoy used for?

I was coming back from sea bass fishing yesterday and came across two of these buoys about 100 feet apart in upper Buzzards Bay. I pulled up along side of them and found no identification marks on them.

Obviously collecting some kind of data, but what for?

It looks like there's a little orange luggage tag type thing with information on there. But you'd have to pull up the buoy to read it and that's probably frowned upon

Show someone how to catch striped bass and they'll be ready to fish anywhere.
Show someone where to go striped bass fishing and you'll have a desperate report chaser with loose lips.

my stepson worked on developing remote sensing buoys, initially for the Florida "rivers" and estuaries. Measured all sorts of physical properties and remotely transmitted it. Turbidity, salinity, pH, clarity, temp and a host of other things.

I wonder if that's associated with Huntington Industries?  They acquired Hydroid in Pocasset a couple years ago, and Hydroid used to paint all their stuff that color yellow.

Yes I pulled the buoy up, no pertinent information on it or the tag

No damage done. A safe release. Swam away healthy

It’s brand new, no sign of wear and tear. It wasn’t there last week when I went by. I’ll check out Huntington Industries

The color is just a guess on my part.  But if I recall, that was more or less their company color. Everything was canary yellow.    Were the bouys located in between Wings and Scraggy Neck, more or less favoring Scraggy?

Ok, that was the area Hydroid did all their testing and experiments with their underwater drones.  So it's probably the same people.

The Huntington group was running some tests on small unmanned drones in Ashumet Pond in Falmouth this spring. I spoke to them about their work, very interesting.

Dare I say it?   Ba-Ba-Buoy?

Is he still on Stern? I stopped listening to him when he went to satellite radio. Other than Robin, I don’t know who's still on the show.
