6500c Help Requested

Hey there, I'm new to the site, and sorry if this question has been asked before. I'm sort of reel stupid and don't know what the right search terms would be.

I'm just getting back into fishing after a long hiatus and grabbed an Abu Garcia 6500c from the flea market today. It mostly works, but you're able to pull line out when the reel is engaged, and the handle turns backwards (even with the drag cranked all the way down). You have to physically hold the handle in place to prevent this. I found the schematics online, but I'm not going to know which parts to replace unless something is obviously broken. Where should I start with this thing? Could it be a drag spacer/washer issue?

I think the reel was manufactured in 89-90.

Thanks in advance for any help you could provide.

Anti- reverse dog is not engaged, possibly become dislodged, or may not even be there!

We’re going to need a few pictures to see what you’re missing or is out of place, hopefully not broken!

I don’t think that year has the anti reverse bearing in the handle side plate!

So you’re gonna need to open it up to see what’s wrong in there, if you’re mechanically inclined, really not that hard at all!

And just be sure to put the reel in a plastic bag, you can see through when removing any of the clips lol!

they like to play hide and seek, and they win every time dammit!

Sorry, I skipped a step lol, loosen the three screws for the side plate and remove it, pop the spindle out and spool and put it somewhere safe, and then put it in the bag and work on it!

Also, be careful of the little centrifical brake blocks do not fall out of the reel either, so you could do everything in the bag to be safe!
Take the cap off for the handle by removing a little screw, then take the nut off!

Then remove the little e clip from the reel inside a bag!

Then slide the handle off the gear sleeve and then remove the star drag and take the two little screws out of the side plate and lift the side plate up!

you’re going to be looking for that little dog in my picture that’s circled in yellow!

Something is not right there!IMG_0446.jpeg.d348d821d8f312f78881bef0cdeb6c6f.jpeg

most spinning reels have an anti reverse switch usually underneath the reel and they sometimes stick, spray some lube like wd40 in it then work the reel handle forward and reverse quickly while moving the anti reverse switch back and forth will some times free it. if it catches leave it alone or you might have to dissemble the reel and lube it to free it .

Okay, so I've opened it up, did some dry fitting, and have a better grasp on how the reel works. I believe I have the anti-reverse but can't quite get it in the right position.

If you get stuck feel free to reach out to me, and I may be able to talk you threw it.

Or If you like you can get me the reel and I can give it a good clean, lube, and tune.

When using WD-40 you want to be careful not to overdo it because WD can eat away

the drags and it will also dissolve the grease inside the reel and makes a big mess.

Welcome to SOL, so many great people willing to help you with all your questions.

The anti-reverse dog (little thing with the copper on it - lower left of your photo - it goes around the "disk" underneath the gear you took out. It works by friction...so it needs to be clean - as does the little "disk" it goes on. Put a little grease on the "disk" after you clean it...it helps the dog engage when the reel tries to go backwards :)  When you put it back together, the little copper fingers of the anti-reverse dog go around the "disk" under the gear - in case that's not how you found it :)

Okay, I think @TimS might be onto something. The "fingers" have been pressed together and were both underneath the bottom cog on the driveshaft. If I'm understanding correctly, they should actually straddle it? And should look like the one in the last photo? I guess I'll buy a new one but try to bend the existing one back in the meantime.

Okay, that actually worked! Thanks so much for the help. Definitely one of the best $25 purchases I've made.

Glad to help - you don’t need a new dog, the little tabs look just fine :)

Sorry about that!

I was trying to help you out and had an emergency!

But looks like the others had it covered!

Glad to see you got it straightened out!

I had a feeling it was the damn dog lol!

Gotten quite a few of them cheap that way!

I see you have the pewter colored side plates!

It’s funny, I love the pewter look on other things, just not on the Abu’s for some reason?

I love them in red and blue, and custom colors!

Well,  keep on posting and participating and get your privileges and before you know it, you’ll be tripping over the damn things lol!

Take care!

Question about the anti reverse dog?

Do they wear out?

I have a situation where after a cast the lure drops down a bit when reel is engaged.

Figured I would ask here..

lt could, if not keep cleaned and lubed, l have Abu reels going back to the late 60s and the anti-reverse dogs are still working fine.

Having a spare would heart.

Those copper pieces need to tight on that bottom gear. You might get play if the fit isn't snug:howdy:
