8'6" 1 Piece Rod Shipping Carriers that aren't cost prohibitive?

Been a few years but I used to ship y 9' one piece rods back and forth from Cape Cod to St Louis to rebuild them, etc, and think I used USPS, maybe FedEx.

I sold a Musky rod on Ebay and the shipping quotes are insane, my fault for not looking first.

Does anyone know a carrier that will ship a 102"x3xe tube for less than $50? Think I've tried DHL, USPS, UPS, FedEx so far.

Thanks!

The problem is that the carriers are going batshit crazy on anything over 8’ now. That’s why a bunch of new 8’ rods are now 7’10”. Even then, I was shopping for an 8’ rod (really 7’10”) and the west coast tackle shop wanted almost $400 for shipping!!

No, you're not going to find anything close to $50 for anything over 8'.

Once you go over 8ft or 96" in package. It's a whole nother ball game. Shipping literally costs more then the rod.

I randomly plugged in a zip to Florida from NYC as an example.   100x5x5 inch. 8lbs.

And these are commercial rates but not at the highest volume discount you can get unless you ship 1000s a month. Can also see why I use UPS more than fedex. FedEx is **** for me. Unpredictable delivery times are the worse.

The last pic is with a 96x5x5 size. 8lb. $30.

Just before hitting oversize threshold.

Night and day difference. $140 to $30....

Fedex ground would be $42 not pictured.

  • 2 weeks later...

The lowest rate I saw was $150,  average was $400.

I found a company, SpeeDee Delivery, that picked it up from my house and delivered it  the next day (From St Louis to Chicago metro, 5 hrs) for $18.87. Crazy. Midwest only.

Yeah, it is insane now. I forget exactly when these new changes happened, but almost overnight ALL the main carriers made the exact same changes for package length (my guess is USPS changed and the rest followed since they knew they were not going to get under-cut by the post office).

Its one of the reasons most of my surf rods are now all 2 piece (that said, the two piece rods now are MUCH better than they were back 20 years ago).

Sometimes these smaller local delivery companies work great. Especially if they always do these runs.  They likely pack the trucks with other goods to be efficient.

I don't think any shipping company would turn down making like $1000 to 2000 a day in a box truck and 1 driver.
